This morning K asked why we are alive. I told her that was a good question people have been asking a long time. I asked her what she thought. She said, "because we eat so much." While it showed she wanted to know what made something alive, it was interesting, too, from that other perspective. As a species, we rarely compare ourselves to vultures or dung beetles or their ilk, yet it is probable that we serve a similar purpose. We're not at all different.
When I see a bunch of insects I've never seen before, I think "this could be IT, this could be First Contact!" And only then do I smash the hell out of them. That's enlightenment, huh? Right up there with these scientists decimating an entire city of ants:
