Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, it's the beginning of a new cake countdown! I'm doing a wedding cake for my friends Judi and Brendan, who are getting married on March 30th.
J&B came over to the Duck Blind yesterday to taste cake and talk design. But the conversation really started last summer at the Great Big Sea concert at the zoo. Judi told us she was getting married, then I mentioned that if she needed an economical option for her wedding cake, I would love to do it for her. She started talking about wanting something worthy of Mike's Amazing Cakes in Redmond (this guy has won more than one Food Network cake challenge), which made me very nervous. I told her my skills weren't up to that, but I'd be willing to do whatever I could to help her out.
The design we came up with is going to be really cool. I'm very excited about it and so are Judi and Brendan. It's more complicated that the design she came in with, but actually concerns me less in the arena of visual interest vs. my limited skills. I can't wait to start playing with techniques to make the design elements happen! My first forays into gum paste and possibly even sugar work!
J&B were very sweet and told me (since I'm not charging them for labor, only supplies) that they would get me some piece of equipment I needed to do the work as my payment. So when they showed up yesterday, they had a big slab of granite for me to use for sugar work, etc!
This project is going to be so much fun because it's going to challenge my skills, push me into mediums I haven't worked with before!
But for now, the countdown:
Cakes needed: 8 (estimate dependent on final guest count)
Cakes baked: 0
Time left: 7 weeks
WHEEE!!!
PS - pictures of my most recent wedding cake, for my niece Jackie, will be coming soon! :o)
