Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd

That's what I did today...I went to see the movie Sweeney Todd, with much trepidation, I must admit.

I thought, Johnny Depp singing that incredible music? Even worse, Helena Bonham Carter singing that incredible music.
Plus, I had heard some not so great things from some of my musical theatre friends. I had also heard some good things...mostly that it was a good Tim Burton movie. But not necessarily a good adaptation of the show.

I will start by saying that Johnny Depp did an admirable job with the role. Not a bad singer, but he doesn't have the vocal power for some of the songs. He acted the hell out of it, though, which I appreciated!
HBC was okay...vocally she was weak, but was able to carry a tune. Acting made up for some of the vocal shortfall. However, I missed some of the ferocity and brashness from the other Mrs. Lovett's I've seen over the years.

The blood was a complete turn off...unnecessary! I kept having to turn away from the screen.

The biggest disappointment, however, was the way they trimmed out the Beggar Woman. The first meeting of her and Sweeney is so important and makes the impact of the ending of the show so much greater. And they completely chopped off the final scene of the show. And they cut all the choral stuff out. If I didn't know the musical so well, I might have enjoyed the movie more.

So...I'm glad I saw the movie. It was indeed a good Tim Burton movie. I don't need to see it again and certainly don't want to own it.

Special big ol' wet raspberries to the assholes who walked out five minutes into the film because they realized it was a musical.

Cretins.
