Grissom stood in the doorway leading to their bedroom and watched Sara bowl another perfect game. She jumped around and Hank gave her a happy bark as Sara waved the Wii’s controller thingy about.

The gaming system had traveled back to Las Vegas with Sara when she had decided to come for a visit.

“I want to get my feet wet, not dive head first into the pool of Las Vegas,” she had told him one morning during their semi-regular phone conversation. There was longing in her voice and he yearned to ease her hurts. “I miss you and the slobber monster.”

And so he had picked her up at the airport one morning for a long weekend. He took a few extra days off to bask in the glow that was Sara after too many days spent in the shadow of her departure.

Of course video games hadn’t been the first item on the agenda. That first morning had been spent reacquainting their bodies and spirits, with Hank only barking and whining a bit. After a lazy lunch and some quality time spent with their pet, Sara had brought the white rectangular box out of her bag and asked if she could set it up.

“It’s still your bedroom Sara,” Grissom had answered while trying to keep the hurt feelings off his face. His biggest worry about Sara leaving was that she wouldn’t feel comfortable coming back.

“I know it’s still my bedroom,” she said with a smile and a shrug. “It’s just I didn’t want to disturb you if you needed to rest.”

He captured her hand and placed a kiss on the palm. “I need no other rest for my weary soul than you here with me.”

She gave him a watery smile and set about to set up the video game. She told him the story about how Greg had suggested it as a way for them to keep in touch. The Wii Sports quickly made an appearance and they had spent a relaxing afternoon bowling, golfing, and even once Sara persuaded him to have a go at the boxing game.

After their long weekend was up, Sara had made no plans to return to San Francisco, or any other places, and Grissom was too wary to say anything else about her travel plans.

He had returned to work and Sara had stayed home. As he was driving away, Sara waved with one hand while Hank enthusiastically tugged her down the road by the other hand.

The night was been fairly busy. A series of break-ins perpetrated by a local gang was quickly wrapped when a hit in CODIS returned five names, who were promptly rounded up by Brass and Sofia. If one thing was true, it was that criminals were infinitely stupid. They were caught in a hangout with the stolen merchandise and in the county jail by sunrise.

And so he returned home to find his love and his dog, engaged in celebration of her success.

“Another perfect game?” Sara startled at his voice but gave him a smile. Hank was eager to show his happiness by coming over and slobbering all over his hands. “Greg commented that you had been online playing games a lot over the last few days.”

“Yeah, he messaged me a few times over the weekend. We even played baseball one afternoon while you slept,” Sara paused the game and walked over to give him a quick kiss. He held onto her for a bit longer, but not enough to make her feel trapped. She wrapped her arms around him and hummed along his neck.

He’d play video games and keep her cocooned in the safety of their home until she was ready to emerge back into the sunlight with her smile.
