Walking into the break room, Sara had to do a double take at the sight of Lindsey Willows seated at the table. She hadn't seen Catherine and it was hours before the night shift started.
"Um, hey Lindsey," Sara said heading to the coffee pot. "Is everything ok?"
"Yeah,” the teenager shrugged. “Mom got held up at an appointment, and it was easier to meet her here than have her head all the way to school to pick me up.” The blonde eyed the CSI appraisingly. “You wouldn't happen to know anything about molarity would you?"
Sara smiled at the girl and sat down to go over the chemistry problems. They had almost finished the homework when Lindsey put down her pencil and looked at Sara with a serious expression.
"I think your hair looks cool all curly like that. I wish mine wasn’t so straight," the teen flipped up an end to emphasize her point.
Sara blinked. "Uh, thanks. I always wished for straight hair if that helps any. Only a few people have ever liked my hair."
"Do you wear it that way for Uncle Gil?" Lindsey ducked her head and picked up her pencil again, feigning returning to her work.
"Since my… since I broke my arm, it's hard to straighten it, because it takes a long time. And since I'm still in the sling Gil is helping with my hair, so yeah, I guess I'm wearing it like this for him. He also, um, likes it curly," Sara finished feeling a bit lame for disclosing that fact.
"I'm really glad you two are together," the girl smiled up at Sara. "He always seemed sad before, you know, when he was alone; but since you were found, I think he's smiled more that I've ever seen."
“Thanks. Um, I’m really happy to be with him, too.” Sara had never been good with teenage girls, even when she had been one, and discussing her relationship with Gil, wasn’t something she was comfortable discussing with anybody but him.
They continued with the chemistry work, Sara slightly dodging a few more personal questions from Lindsey by redirecting them back at the girl. Sara learned about the coolest people, the cutest boy ever, and why being a teenager today was so unbearably hard. Sara’s patience was wearing thin by the time the homework was complete.
As if summoned by the gods themselves to save her, Catherine and Grissom walked in at that exact moment. Lindsey thanked Sara again, telling her mom how awesome Sara was and how cool her hair was, and asked if she could e-mail Sara if she had any more questions. At Sara’s nod, the Willows women left to take Lindsey home. Grissom took a seat next to Sara and gave her a curious look.
“You look a little uncomfortable, darling,” he said with a mischievous smile. “Do you have a new, um, what is the term? BFF in the young Miss Willows?”
“Oh, hush you,” Sara laughed and playfully took a swipe at him with her good arm. He caught her hand, and still smiling, held it in his for a few beats. As the rest of the team made their way in, Sara wished them all a good night and left the break room to head home. Gil walked her out to her car, and as they stood by her car he caught one of her curls and twirled it around his finger while a small smile curved his lips, and Sara thought that while she and Lindsey might not be BFFs, it was nice to know other people thought she made Grissom as happy as he made her.
