SO - I want to talk TV. I have purposefully stayed away from LJ this week because I didn't want to read anyone's thoughts before I could successfully put mine down. Let's get started shall we?
Friday Night Lights
Once again, I thought we had a really great episode this last week. I really enjoy the creator's eye for detail in people's lives. I think that is the beauty of this show. The creators don't ignore the beauty of day-to-day life; they almost seem to celebrate it. And it works - because in truth most of us have the kind of average-Joe lives that we're seeing on the screen.
Anyway I loved so much about this episode. The 4 boys on the football field connecting [but still being boys about it]. I loved how Smash told them about his situation with the annoying-Waverly and how he was handling it like a man - by hiding, avoiding her phone calls, etc. THAT is so real. Funny - but real. AND I believe we also got a huge foreshadowing as to what Jason may in fact do with his life. He was fantastic coaching Matt to overcome his fears and concentrate on learning something new. He was able to tap into something that perhaps Coach Taylor hadn't yet. It was great!
Naturally the Taylor family always takes First Prize for my favorite family on TV. Just love everything showing them and everything about them. And on the other side of that - I really just want the Garrity Divorce to happen. Although I feel badly for Lyla. She surprised me by crashing cars in her daddy's lot. And speaking of Lyla - I do think the time has come for her and Jason to call of their engagement. Be friends. I think they would always be very close friends - but their paths are going in opposite directions here. And it's time for the two of them to be honest about that.
I loved most of the Tyra/Tim parallel storylines - both of them getting a taste of the kind of life they'd like to lead. Family life they'd like to have. Naturally Tyra's mother kind of put a stank on Tyra's experience - but she partially redeems herself later. I hope that continues. And Tim really is sweet with that little kid and the mom. But of course the moment I had been fearing and dreading since she came on the show DID happen. Tim went in for the kiss - and smartly she pushed him away. I thought, "Oh good - they just AREN'T going to go there."
OOPS - I was wrong. Later they did and a woman in her 30's got to have hot sex with Tim Riggins. But you know what???? THAT IS SO VERY VERY VERY VERY WRONG.
I don't care how hot it might have been for us to see. We all know that the Tayler Kitsch is in his 20's. He's hot. Brooke Langton is hot. But Tim Riggins is a teenager in high school. A senior. And it is SO WRONG for that woman to have done what she did. It made me sick. And angry. I honestly don't know what anyone besides
lady_m2835 thought about it. We talked a bit and we both loved the same things about the episode, but she knew I was just going to hate this part. And she was right. And seriously - it isn't good TV. It isn't common. It isn't normal. I think it was a huge mistake for the creators to make this choice and explore this avenue and I'm so hugely disappointed. SERIOUSLY.
LOST [The Man from Tallahassee]
OH MY GOD. WOW. BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON SO FAR. Seriously. Everyone was so damned good. The Others. The survivors. Terry O'Quinn. Matthew Fox [give that man an EMMY already - please?!] Everyone. So damned good.
Okay yes I'm going to gush and gush and let my Jack/Kate 'shipper heart just beat and pound and soar. OH BOY. The look on Kate's face as she watches Jack playing on the piano [I think that might have been really Matthew playing as well]. The look Jack gives her before he pulls himself together to tell her to get out quickly - they are being watched [OF COURSE we all knew that already!]. Jack yelling out, "Don't hurt her! Don't hurt her!" as the Others come in and take her hostage agin.
Later in the Rec Room [did you guys catch Tom warning Jack about surveillance in that room....? I think that is what he was doing]. I think that we all can agree that Jack wouldn't make plans to leave the island without it including trying to get help for his fellow survivors. Of course - that is so Jack. But see he doesn't know what we know. That apparently you can't get back. Anyway, that entire scene between Jack and Kate in the Rec Room just about killed me. Dead. The way he reacts when Kate reaches out to grab and hold his hand and arm. The looks in both of their eyes as they sit there trying to say what is important, hold other stuff in, and yet...GAH
It's very clear to me that Kate was afraid that news of her sleeping with Sawyer had been told to Jack- and that she wanted to make the situation clear. Of course she doesn't know that Jack saw her with his own eyes [damn Ben and his manipulations]. But it also didn't seem to change how Jack feels about Kate as a whole. I think that he knows that Kate feels more for him than she's comfortable in feeling - I think he totally gets and understands her. Honestly. But the way he was telling her that he was going to go for help, and then later, standing and nuzzling her hair to tell her, "I am coming back for you" - KILLED ME.
OH Jack and Kate forever. Yes indeed. And that was the first scene I teared up in. There were 3!
Oh Locke. John Locke. YOU ARE BACK MAN!!! It was so strange to see him in a house, using electricity, eating cold left-over chicken. So surreal - and what a lovely touch. I loved the fact that he blew up the submarine. In reality he didn't hurt his fellow survivors as much as he hurt Ben with that action. Locke already knew that once folks left you couldn't get back anyway. But he was fighting Ben on his own nasty down and dirty terms. And sure it won't hurt Ben AS much since his people will not think that Ben had anything to do with it - but there are going to be those like Alex and Juliet, and now I wonder if Tom is WITH Juliet in her plan....but I digress...that will know that Ben could very well have stopped Locke from his blow-up plan.
But what is also important about Locke's action is that he was finally taking charge [no pun intended] of his own life too. Saying - I will not be pushed around and used anymore. Although he knew that Ben was letting him follow through with the plan - that wasn't as important as making sure that he followed through with it. Maybe that doesn't make sense as I type it - but it does in my head. I think he's trying to tip the scales and get more power for himself. And he knows that Ben will continue to "follow" because Ben is in the wheelchair and Locke is not.
Ben was born on the island. Lived their his entire life. And still - became ill. And is stuck in a wheelchair. Locke lived most of his life being taken advantage of and pushed around. He always tried to find the good in every situation and yes, it did bite him in the ass more than once. But he didn't manipulate people for his own gains. He didn't recruit people, telling them they could leave at anytime, having it be important that they THINK they can leave. Locke continued to try and do good and to help those he could. And I think that is part of the reason why he actually survived that 8-story drop instead of dying. I think that Locke is our present day Job. I'm also pretty sure that I'm not the first to toss that idea out there...Anyway, Locke comes to the island and is immediately freed of his shackles as it were. Given a gift. The island revealed itself to him and it was beautiful. It has communed with him. And? It isn't with Ben.
WARNING I'VE GOT ANOTHER THEORY!!! AND - more importantly?! You ready for it...??? Ben isn't the one that somehow got Locke's father to appear "in the Box". OH NO. It was Locke. Locke doesn't even know it. But I believe that the island brought Adam Seward/Anthony Cooper to that island FOR LOCKE. Another gift. And THAT is why Ben went over to the other side of the island in the first place to look for Locke. He told him way back when he was locked up that he'd come looking for him. AND THAT I BELIEVE IS TRUE. YOU BETCHA!
Anyway I also got teary-eyed when Danielle was watching her daughter. And when Locke was being lifted into his wheelchair for the first time. He was so terrified and well I just broke down and wept.
CRAP - I have to go. I'm running late. I may have more thoughts to add to this LOST episode though....
Supernatural
Not the best episode. Started well - ended very well. The middle? Not so much. HUGE yawn factor there. Except for seeing Sammy practically naked. That was okay by me. Although I still would have preferred him to get naked with Sara - not wolf-lady. *sigh* But it was the end that really did it for me. As usual, the Winchester Brothers KILLED me. Poor Sammy all choked up and weeping as he knows he has to kill his girl. And Dean trying to take it from him and not have Sam carry that burden. And then weeping with the one tear that his baby brother did it anyway. OH MY.
