in defence of the romantic comedy

I am a person who makes lists. I have a notebook full of them: cities I want to live in, favourite smells, names for a kitten, songs for a rainy day, characters I wish I had created, and on and on. At the top of my simple pleasures/instant happiness list? Romantic comedies. I love them! I really do, and I'm not the least bit embarrassed about it. Watching romantic comedies is like wrapping yourself in a big cosy blanket. Or laughing with friends until your face hurts. Or that time in the seventh grade when you sat in the grass outside the book fair with the guy you had liked for years, and the sun was glinting off your eyelashes and he smiled and stole some of your cotton candy, and you wanted to freeze time.

That's what The Jane Austen Book Club is like. Well, for me it's all books and pretty people and GRIGG, but my point is that it's happiness movie-fied. What better way to illustrate that than with a picpsam? There isn't one, I say.

These aren't in any order, because I was futzing around with them in photoshop and can't be bothered to sort them out.

Meet Grigg. He is pretty.

"He looks at me like he's the spoon and I'm the bowl of icecream."

That look right there? That's code for I LOVE YOU. Really! She mirrors is later, you'll see.

Pretty pretty pretty.

I didn't really like Allegra in the book, but I love Maggie as Allegra. I think I just really miss seeing Maggie at all.

How he just stands there! SKASKFALHK.

More Grigg being pretty! At night! I think my favourite line is earlier, when they're in the car, and he says "I enjoy seeing the river." IT IS HILARIOUS TO ME, I DON'T KNOW WHY.

BOYS + BOOKS = DEATH.

He's signing up for love! YOU GUYS.

Maggie!! Apparently she really loves Austen and was geeking out with the screenwriter during her audition!

Prettyyyy. Did it bother anyone else, though, how similar her Amy Brenneman's character in JABC seemed to Violet on Private Practice? This entire movie could have been her screen test for the show, or vice versa, depending which was filmed first.

He's still completely Santos to me. I couldn't stop thinking about TWW when he was onscreen.

GUH.

IT'S THAT LOOK AGAIN! Only reversed!

There was this screencap that I tried SO HARD to get, but it kept coming out blurry, of hands pulling at shirts and buttons. IT WAS LOVELY. Alas, we will have to make do with that little this-is-actually-happening! pause before the actual making out really begins.

This is from the extra features. Adorableness during rehearsals! Excellent.

ETA: Oh, and I lied earlier. My favourite line is actually what Grigg says in the hospital book club meeting, about being willing to risk your heart.
