There aren’t as many movies I’m looking forward to in 2020 but there’s still plenty of interesting ones coming up.
1917. Premieres 1/10. A movie set in WW1 about two soldiers trying to deliver an important message. DVD view.
Underwater. 1/10. A team is trapped in an underwater research station after an earthquake and are stalked by a creature released by the quake. DVD view.
Three Christs. 1/10. Based on a true story about a psychiatrist in the 1950’s who tried to treat mental patients with compassion and therapy rather than more brutal methods. DVD view.
Dolittle. 1/17. I loved the Dr. Dolittle books when I was a kid and this looks visually awesome. Robert Downey, Jr. plays the title character. Possible theater view.
Weathering with You. 1/17. An anime about a young man befriending a girl who can control the weather. DVD view.
Cats. 1/24. An animated film about cats. Not the Broadway musical one. DVD view.
Color Out of Space. 1/24. A film starring Nicholas Cage about a meteor that strikes a small town and unleashes an alien invasion. DVD view.
Gretal and Hansel. 1/31. A dark take on the classic fairy tale. DVD view.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.) 2/7. Definitely one of the longest movie titles out there. This looks like fun even if some of the characters seem completely out of character. Theater view.
Waiting for Anya. 2/7. A story about two people saving Jewish children during WW2. DVD view.
Fantasy Island. 2/14. A darker take on the classic TV show. DVD view.
Sonic the Hedgehog. 2/14. I never actually played the game this is based on but it looks mildly interesting. DVD view.
Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon. 2/14. These are cute and I do like animated films. DVD view.
The Call of the Wild. 2/21. Based on the classic book by Jack London. DVD view.
Sea Fever. 2/28. Researchers at sea are attacked by weird creatures. DVD view.
Wendy. 2/28. A dark take on Peter Pan. DVD view.
Onward. 3/6. Animated fantasy with the voices of Chris Pratt and Tom Holland? I’m in. Possible theater view.
Bloodshot. 3/14. Based on a comic book series which I haven’t read. Still, it looks decent. DVD view.
I am Patrick. 3/17. A Christian-based film about the life of St. Patrick. DVD view.
A Quiet Place Part II. 3/21. I loved the first one and this sequel adds Cillian Murphy. Probably a theater view.
Mulan. 3/27. Live-action remake of the Disney film without the music or any cute animal sidekicks. Still, I do like a good action flick. DVD view.
New Mutants. 4/3. This is the third release date for this movie. They keep pulling it from the line-up which is very frustrating. I really want to see it and I’m not alone. If they don’t cancel it again, definite theater view.
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. 4/3. The first one was cute so I’ll probably like this one too. DVD view.
Monster Problems. 4/17. A movie about a guy trying to survive an invasion of monsters while searching for the woman he loves. DVD view.
Trolls World Tour. 4/17. I liked the first movie so I’m sure I’ll like this one too. DVD view.
Fatima. 4/24. A Christian-based film about the three children of Fatima, Portugal who saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. DVD view.
Black Widow. 5/1. Another Marvel movie. Black Widow wasn’t one of my favorite characters but the Marvel Universe as a whole is always great. Probably a theater view.
Artemis Fowl. 5/29. I never read the books this is based on but it still looks like fun. DVD view.
Wonder Woman 1984. 6/5. I loved the first one and this looks great. Theater view.
Chicken Run 2. 6/12. Animated sequel. I like animated films so I’ll see it at some point. DVD view.
Minions: The Rise of Gru. 7/3. Another Minions movie. The first one was fun so I’m sure I’ll like this one too. DVD view.
Free Guy. 7/3. Ryan Reynolds discovers he’s a background character in a video game and has to learn how to be a hero. It looks like fun. DVD view.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. 7/10. This is set in the Ghostbusters “universe” but doesn’t star the original cast although they are making another Ghostbusters sequel. I’ll have to find out more about this one. Probably DVD view.
Tenet. 7/17. A movie involving time-travel and other sci-fi elements by Christopher Nolan. This movie is being kept largely secret but if it’s anything like his other movies, it should be good. Possible theater view.
Jungle Cruise. 7/24. A movie starring Dwayne Johnson about a trip into the jungle in search of a tree with healing properties. DVD view.
Morbius. 7/31. Another Marvel movie about one of my favorite Spider-Man villain/anti-hero, Morbius, the Living Vampire, played here by Jared Leto. The trailer looks great. Theater view.
Infinite. 8/7. A movie about a man who finds out he can access memories of past lives as well as the abilities he had then. It’s an interesting premise. DVD view.
Malignant. 8/14. A man with cancer finds out his tumor is really a parasite that gives him superpowers. Interesting but weird. DVD view.
The One and Only Ivan. 8/14. This is based on a children’s book which was based on a real story. I read the book so I want to see the movie now. It’s about a gorilla kept in an enclosure in a mall along with other animals. DVD view.
Bill and Ted Face the Music. 8/21. I enjoyed the first two Bill and Ted movies so even though it’s been a long time, I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one too. DVD view.
Monster Hunter. 9/4. Two people team up to hunt monsters and close a portal that’s allowing the monsters to come to Earth. DVD view.
The King’s Man. 9/18. Based on the graphic novels, the movie explores the origin of the Kingsmen group through the decades. DVD view.
Starbright. 9/25. A young woman escapes into a world of fantasy to deal with her tragic past. DVD view.
Venom 2. 10/2. The first one was decent but it’s not my favorite so I’m not super excited about the second one except how it ties into the Spider-Man movies if it does. DVD view.
Bios. 10/2. Tom Hanks plays the last man left alive on Earth who creates a robot to take care of his beloved dog after he dies. Interesting premise. DVD view.
The Witches. 10/9. The second remake of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name. DVD view.
Snake-Eyes. 10/23. A G.I. Joe spin-off focusing on the character of Snake-Eyes. DVD view.
The Eternals. 11/6. I’ve never read the Marvel comic series this is based on but it’s got a great cast. Possible theater view.
Dune. 11/20. I don’t know how they’re going to fit such a long book into one movie but I did like the book even though I only ever read the first one. DVD view.
Raya and the Last Dragon. 11/25. Animated Disney film about a girl searching for the last dragon in the world. DVD view.
Samaritan. 12/11. This is described as a “dark, fresh take” on superheroes. I don’t know anything else about it but I do love superhero movies. DVD view.
Uncharted. 12/18. Based on a video game I’ve never played but it sounds interesting. DVD view.
The Croods 2. 12/23. I liked the first one of these so I’ll probably like this one too. DVD view.
News of the World. 12/25. A Western road trip movie with Tom Hanks. Sounds interesting. DVD view
So that’s four that I definitely want to see in theaters and six possible theater views. That’s the least amount in a while but that’s fine. I still have plenty of past movies to catch up on.
