I learn new things about (things from) Japan whenever I watch NHK World during lunch at work. =)
A couple days ago, they had a show called "The Osaka Way", in which they featured custom made umbrellas by a company called Fukui Yougasa, Inc. (Fukui Umbrella, Inc.).

There's some mention of it in
this article. While they're pretty expensive, what's pretty interesting is that they're all custom-made by hand, the frame is lightweight, and you can pick the amount of ribs you want as well as whatever pattern they have available. And you can also pick if you want a rounder or deeper one. The fabric is made of high-density polyester.
Probably the one thing I learned from the show was that you want an umbrella that's comfortable to carry, so you want one that is about the length of your hand, if not shorter. If it's any longer, it'll feel like it's dragging.
They do maintenance free of charge, such as if the stitching needs to be made taunt again, or if there's a hole, they can patch it up because they keep fabric remnants from each of the orders they get.
