Numb3rs belongs to Cheryl Heuton and Nicholas Falacci, Grey’s Anatomy belongs to Shonda Rhimes, Heroes belongs to Tim Kring, LA Heat belongs to whoever its creator is, Sports Night belongs to Aaron Sorkin and Lost belongs to JJ Abrams.I really don’t mean to offend anyone and nothing of what I wrote in this story is to be considered real, it’s all fiction.
Author’s Notes: Okay, so…first thing. You don't need to know the shows I put in this story, so don't worry about that. I know it sounds crazy to mix up real people and fictional characters. But trust me, I had a hell of a lot of fun writing this, and if you give it a chance, maybe you’ll enjoy reading it! ^_-

Chapter 7 - ‘Breakfasts and car crashes’

As he sat down in the kitchen Jared was sure the awkward was right there behind the corner, waiting to come out and laugh at him, ruining everything. It was 8 in the morning, he’d taken his morning run and he’d prepared coffee. Just like every morning, just like he expected Jensen to pretend nothing had happened just a few hours before.

After they’d broken the hug Jensen had gone back to sleep, and Jared had kept drawing until it was late, or early, enough to go out and run. And now he was waiting for the inevitable, he waited for Jensen to enter from the door and tell him it had been a mistake, they shouldn’t be doing that.

“Hey, you didn’t go back to sleep?” Jensen asked from the doorstep, yawning.

“No, not really.” Jared shrugged, pouring a cup of coffee and handing it to Jensen.

“Thanks.” Jensen addressed him a wide smile and saw Jared blush, looking away as their fingers touched. It was so damn cute it almost hurt to look at him. “You wanna talk about it?”

“I…” Jared bit on his lower lip, looking tentatively at Jensen. “I’m not sure how…how to deal with all this.” He showed a little smile, but he took a step towards Jensen as he saw his expression change into a worried frown. “I’m not backin’ off, not having second thoughts, I just…I wanna give it a shot, if…well, if you want it too.”

“I want to, I really do.” Jensen replied, a little unsure smile on his lips. “But there are things about me…I’m fucked up, Jared, I’m trying to get the pieces together and it’s gonna be hard.” The smile faltered as he went on. “And if you let me lean on you, I’ll end up being a weight and…it’s too much. I can’t ask you that.”

“I don’t care.” Jared said immediately, taking a deep breath and finding the gut to speak his mind. “I know you went through awful things, dunno what exactly, but I guess I’ll know when you’ll feel like tellin’ me.” He locked his gaze with Jensen’s. “And I’m okay with that. Really. It kinda scares the hell out of me, but I want to be here every step, I want you to lean on me, I don’t wanna lose this. I don’t wanna lose you.”

Jensen looked at him for a few seconds, hating what he was about to say. “What if I asked you to…to let me go?”

Jared felt his heart drop in his chest and lowered his gaze. “I’d let you go, even if I know it’d hurt like hell.”

Jensen took a slow step towards him and put his hands on the sides of Jared’s neck, his thumbs caressing the boy’s jaw. “Let’s give it a shot, then.”

“What…? You just said…” Jared frowned in confusion, but his words were stopped by Jensen’s lips on his, and he wasn’t going to complain.

When they broke the kiss Jensen smiled up to him. “Want to grab some breakfast? I know a nice place.”

“Yeah, I’m starving.”

Jared smiled widely as Jensen stole a sip of his coffee and then went to dress.

~

“So you’re the infamous Jared?” Jeff asked, looking at the boy with a raised eyebrow. “You’re not that cute.”

“Jeff.” Jensen glared at him and sat down. “Sorry, he’s always like that.” He looked at Jared and felt relieved with he saw the boy was amused and didn’t look offended.

“Hey, I’m just saying you keep telling me how cute he is, but he’s…”

“You tell him I’m cute?” Jared asked with a grin, looking at Jensen.

“I don’t really --”

“Every single day.” Jeff interrupted him, pouring coffee for both of them.

“I hate you.” Jensen muttered in Jeff’s direction, and Jared laughed, taking a sip from his coffee. Jensen’s cell phone rang and he stood, frowning. “Be right back.”

Jared watched him worried, and nodded. He turned his gaze back at the man behind the counter and showed a little smirk. “So you’re the infamous Jeff?”

“You know about the infamous Jeff?” The man raised an eyebrow and started to prepare pancakes. “Want some?” Jared simply nodded.

“Tom told me a few things about you. And Jen talks a lot about you.” Jared took another sip of coffee, wincing slightly and reaching for the sugar. “But he doesn’t say you’re cute.”

“I bet he doesn’t.” Jeff laughed at that and flipped the pancakes, looking back at the boy. “What does he say?”

“A lot of things. Good things.” Jared mirrored the grin but didn’t say anything else. He saw the newspaper on the counter and pointed at it. “Can I…?”

Jeff was surprised that the boy had actually asked for it, and nodded, taking mental note to add some points on the boy’s account for the good manners. And a couple for the cuteness too. He wouldn’t have admitted it, but he had to agree with Jensen on that, even if he said the opposite. Jared had that kind of smile that could melt stone.

The boy took the newspaper and opened on the job advertisements page, going through it and biting on his lower lip, worried.

“I thought you already had a job.” Jeff said, frowning and putting the pancakes on the counter in front of the two boys’ seats.

“I kinda wanted a second job for, you know, the rent and stuff.” Jared explained without taking the eyes away from the page. “I don’t wanna be a weight.”

Jensen came back with a smile, getting back in his seat.

“Chris.” He announced with an amused light in his eyes. “Last updates. Meredith’s seeing a vet, McDreamy’s jealous and Addison is gonna freak out.” Jared burst into laugh, the fork still in his hand. Jensen had told him about Chris’ new job and how it sounded crazy as hell. “Oh, and he says there’s a patient that reminds him of you, only nicer.” Jensen added, looking at Jeff.

“I am nice.” The man muttered, narrowing his eyes. “I just don’t want to be to him.”

“And to the rest of the world.” Jensen finished for him, and saw Jeff scowl before walking to serve a new customer.

“So, McDreamy’s still in love with Meredith?” Jared asked as he started to eat.

“Apparently.” Jensen did the same, a little smile never leaving his face. “You know, it’s kinda scary to think that those two opened my head and actually managed to fix it. It’d look like they don’t have exactly time for medicine in that hospital.” Jared laughed, the pancakes almost going down the wrong way. “But it’s cool. It’s like having my personal soap opera every day.”

“You planning on goin’ to see Chris?”

“Yeah, was thinkin’ about it.” Jensen shrugged, watching as Jeff served his second favorite customer. Samantha Smith, a blond lawyer that apparently had the ability to turn Jeff into a polite, lovable human being with nothing more than her smile. She was in her thirties, but she had a teenage niece, Alona, who lived with her and used to come to the diner too in the afternoons. And Jeff treated the seventeen year old like his own daughter.
Jensen didn’t know where the girl’s parents were, but apparently Samantha never mentioned them to Jeff and the man had guessed they weren’t in her life anymore.

“You…” Jared hesitated, and his uncertain tone made Jensen wake from his thoughts. “You told him about…” He gestured between them.

“Not yet.” Jensen replied, looking at the boy and trying to lock their gazes together. When he managed to he smiled. “He’s very protective, very overprotective. He’d fly back here to threaten you in a lot of scary and possibly painful ways. I want to tell him in person.”

“Oh.” The smile came back to Jared’s face, but it didn’t last for long. “What about Tom?”

“Hey, I don’t…” Jensen took a deep breath, his hand resting on Jared. “There’s no need to hide it. It’s something good. You want to…?”

“No!” Jared didn’t even let him finish the question. “I don’t wanna hide or lie or anything. I just…we’re taking it slow, and I wanted to be sure you’re okay with this.”

Jensen felt the butterflies in his stomach come back all over again at the boy’s worry. Jared cared if things were okay, or if they weren’t, and Jensen felt like he was a step closer to get control back. He wanted that, and not only because it meant being in control of his life again, but because it was Jared, and Jared made him feel happy. And it was exactly was he was going to tell Eric. He knew the man was going to be confused and maybe worried about this, but it felt too damn right to be wrong.

Jensen’s hand rose to the side of Jared’s neck and pulled gently him closer.

“I’m more than okay.” Jensen said with a slow smile on his face and he leaned in, planting a chaste kiss on Jared’s lips and feeling the flavor of strawberries from the syrup.

When they got back to their breakfast Jared had the hugest smile he’d ever seen and Jensen wondered one more time how could their parents not want him around.

“Tell me I didn’t see what I think I just saw.” Jeff walked back to them, stunned. Jensen looked at the man with a cheerful smirk and noticed Samantha was looking at them with a sweet expression.

“You saw exactly what you think you just saw.”

“I’ll be damned!” Jeff chuckled, taking a closer look at Jared, who blushed and toyed with his fork and the pancakes. “One false step and you’re dead meat.” He added, locking his gaze with Jared’s.

The boy knew Jeff meant it to be a joke, but in his eyes he could see the real threat and nodded without looking away. “Yessir.”

“Jeff!” Jensen scowled at him and shook his head. “Don’t listen to him.” Jared smiled reassuringly and Jensen felt relieved. Apparently dealing with Jeff wasn’t something Jared wasn’t prepared for.

~

“Hey, kid.” Jeff called as the boys were about to leave the diner. Jared looked at him and frowned, slightly worried. “You like this place?”

“Yeah…” Jared replied, trying to understand where that was going. “It’s nice.”

“You’re starting on Monday. 8 am, don’t be late or I’ll kick your just hired ass.” Jeff grinned and turned to pour some more coffee in Samantha’s cup.

Jared didn’t say anything for a few seconds, a wide smile spreading on his face. “Thanks, man!”

Jeff didn’t look up and waved him to go, but Jared could see the smirk on his face. Jensen laughed, opening the door and heading outside.

“That was sweet.” Samantha looked up at Jeff and the man showed a sincere smile.

~~

Jared looked around and spotted Tom sitting behind the counter, reading some papers. Jensen had to see Eric in something more than an hour, and he’d driven Jared to the Crimson after they’d left the diner.

“Hey, man!”

“Hey, Tom!” Jared couldn’t help but feel worried about Tom’s reaction, and he knew it was going to get him in trouble with the boy. Still, he couldn’t take the smile off his face as he reached his friend.

“Look who’s still bouncy over his crush.” Tom grinned at him and closed the newspaper he had in hand.

Jared knew he had to tell him, but didn’t reply immediately, he just bit on his lip and looked at his friend.

“Jared, you okay?”

Tom looked at him, worried and confused by the sudden change, and Jared decided it was better to spill it immediately.

“Wekindamighthavekissedinthekitchenthismorning.”

“You kinda might have what?” Tom almost dropped the newspaper as his eyes went wide and Jared took a deep breath.

“We kinda might have kissed.” Jared repeated slower and he saw the sheer surprise on Tom’s face. “In the kitchen.” He could have avoided giving that detail, but he just needed to talk, maybe it would have delayed the moment when Tom was going to kick his ass and start yell at him. “This morning. Well, last night.” He frowned, not looking at the older guy. “How d’you consider 5 in the morning?”

“Why the hell weren’t you two sleeping at 5 in the morning?”

“Long story.” And Jared really didn’t want to tell Tom about the sketch book and Jensen’s surprising reaction to them. That was between him and Jensen, and no one else.

“And what the hell happened to the whole “I’m not planning on telling him” philosophy?” Tom raised from his seat, shaking his head.

“It kinda happened.” Jared sat down and tried to find a way to explain Tom how things were between him and Jensen. “Listen, I know you’re worried, but…we’re takin’ it slow.”

“You have no idea what Jensen went through, how can you believe you can handle this?”

“I know he’s messed up, I know he had a lot of shit in his life.” Jared felt anger rise up in his chest and he stood, facing Tom. “I dunno what it was, but I’m not that stupid, Tom, I know shit. Maybe not as bad, but I know shit.”

“Not this kind.” Tom replied, shaking his head and breaking eye contact. “What Nathan did to him while they were together, when Jensen left hi…”

“Shut up!” Jensen said from the door, and they both turned to look at him. “Shut the hell up!”

His eyes moved from Tom to Jared, and the boy saw the rage in there. “Jen…”

Jensen didn’t reply, he simply walked towards the counter. “You have no right to tell him what to do, you have no right to tell me what’s better.” He kept his eyes fixed on Tom’s. “And you have no right to tell him what happened. That’s up to me!”

“I…I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”

“You know what?” Jensen asked, his rage obvious as he put his hands on the counter and looked right at Tom. “I’m sick tired of people tellin’ me I shouldn’t live my life ‘cause I’m gonna get hurt again and I had enough pain for a lifetime!” His fist connected with the counter but he didn’t flinch. “I fuckin’ know what I went through! But stop thinkin’ I can’t fuckin’ handle it, ‘cause if I ain’t shot myself an year ago, why would I do it now?”

As soon as the words got out of his mouth his breath hitched and he took a step backwards, rage leaving space to confusion. Shoot himself? Yeah, he remembered that. He remembered the bruises on his wrists, the loaded gun in his hands, and no one in the room stopping him. But he hadn’t pulled the trigger.

He sat down slowly, trying to remember something more. He hadn’t pulled the trigger, why? The phone. It had rung and he’d answered, only to hear his little sister greeting him with her cheerful fourteen years old voice. His sister, she loved him, he’d told himself he didn’t want to make her sad, to make her cry, and he’d put the gun away. He hadn’t shot himself for his family.

“Jen, you okay?” Jared asked, sitting down and facing him.

“No, I’m not fuckin’ okay.” Jensen’s voice was low and raged, but as he looked up at Jared he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, the image of the gun was still in his head and he re-opened them immediately. “Sorry.”

“It’s gonna be okay.” Jared’s hands went to cup the boy’s cheeks and he guided him until their gaze were locked. “I’m here.”

Jensen felt something in his chest tighten and he nodded, trying desperately to believe in those words. He leaned in and rested his forehead against Jared, showing a weak smile.

“That’s better.” Jared whispered, thumbs caressing the freckles on the boy’s cheeks.

Tom watched them and felt like an intruder, realizing he shouldn’t be seeing that. He started to walk away as silently as he could.

“Tom.” Jensen called, his tone calmer and worried. “I’m sorry for the yelling.”

“No, I’m sorry. I had no right to tell him.”

“We okay?” Jensen showed a little smile and Tom nodded, seeing Jared lower his gaze. “You won’t hold it against my boyfriend, will you?”

Jared raised his eyes at those words and looked at Jensen with a half smile. It felt weird to hear the word ‘boyfriend’ referred to him, but he liked how it sounded. And he liked that it was Jensen who said it.

“I won’t.” Tom replied, his smile widening as he resumed walking away.

As soon as he was out of view, Jensen turned towards Jared and bit on his lip.

“Are you okay, Jen?”

“I…” Jensen looked away, breaking the contact between them. “I just remembered…”

“What?”

Jensen looked up, shaking his head and forcing a smile on his lips. “Nothing.”

“Hey…” Jared’s hands were back on his cheeks and Jensen ended up looking in the boy’s worried eyes again. “Talk to me.” When Jensen didn’t say anything Jared just nodded, pulling him into a hug. “Okay. I…I’ll wait.”

“Why?” Jensen muttered against Jared’s shoulder. “Why you want to be with someone like me?”

“You’re the closest thing I have to a family and I don’t care how hard all this is gonna be, I know I can handle it.” Jared looked at him with a dead serious expression, which was kind of rare for Jared. “Being with you is totally worth a little trouble.”

“How d’you know?”

“I’ve been living with you for a month, I kinda learned to know you.” A slow smile spread on Jared’s lips and Jensen could tell he was talking straight from his heart, something Jared seemed to do a lot. “I dunno what happened and who you were before, but I know who you are now, I like it…I like it a lot and it’s all that matters.”

“Gee…I guess I’m stuck with you, then.” Jensen let the smile curve his lips and leaned for a kiss, feeling relieved.

As they broke apart, Jensen put something on the counter. “You left your phone in the car.”

Jared laughed and shook his head, taking the object and putting it in his pocket.

“Jared, what Tom was telling you…”

“Hey.” Jared said with a gentle squeeze on Jensen’s hand. “You’ll tell me when you feel sure about it, not ‘cause Tom was going all protective old buddy on my ass.”

“Okay.”

And Jensen felt a weight being lifted from his chest. He didn’t want to tell Jared yet, he needed to talk to Eric, to put together the blur of emotions the new memories had caused.

~~

“I remembered almost shooting myself.”

Eric’s eyebrows lifted immediately, and he looked suddenly worried. “What exactly?”

“I remembered the gun, the room, and the phone call that stopped me.”

Eric nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Jensen’s thoughtful ones. “I remember you told me in one of our first meetings that it was you sister who stopped you.”

“Yeah, I probably wouldn’t be here right now if she didn’t call.”

“And now?” At that question Eric saw the surprised on Jensen’s face. “You ever thought about shooting yourself after the accident?”

“No.” Jensen’s reply was sincere, up to that moment the thought had never touched his mind. “It kinda came back to me while I was…” He hesitated, biting on his lower lip and saw Eric frown. “While I was goin’ psycho-ass on Tom.”

“You went psycho-ass on Tom because…”

“‘cause he almost told Jared about Nathan.” Jensen said lowering his gaze, then took a deep breath. “And ‘cause he was talking Jared out of our…relationship. And I didn’t want Jared to back off.” He didn’t look up and just kept going, because he knew that if he looked up he wouldn’t tell everything, and Eric needed to hear everything. “I didn’t want him to back off, and I know it’s selfish, but he’s just too important, I let him get close and now I can’t think of him walking away.”

“You wanted to shoot yourself ‘cause you thought no one cared enough about you to be there and help you.” Jensen saw the man’s serious expression and hoped he wasn’t going to talk him out of their story too. “You let him get close, as you said, and the fear of losing Jared probably caused your mind to regain those memories.”

“He says he wants to be here every step, he says he can handle this…” Jensen took a deep breath, remembering Jared’s reassuring smile and he felt a warm sensation in his chest. “And I trust him, I didn’t know, I didn’t think I would, but I trust him.”

“Sometimes people really mean what they say.” Eric replied with a little smile. “It’s a big step to trust someone like you trust Jared. Big steps are good.”

“I trusted Nathan too.” Jensen muttered, looking down and hating the truth in those words.

“You did.” Eric confirmed, his voice low and serious. “And you made a mistake. Everyone can make mistakes and some are worse than others.” Jensen looked up and could tell the man wasn’t about to talk him out of his choice at all. “But closing yourself in a shell would be the worst of all. It would be like letting Nathan win.”

“You don’t know how good it feels to hear someone not trying to talk me or Jared out of it.”

“You’re not a child, my task is to help you, but you can make decisions without my approval.” Eric let out a soft affectionate laughter. “I know you’ll be careful, and besides, if things go south, I’m right here.”

“Man, I knew there was a reason I paid you the big bucks.” Jensen joked, but he felt really grateful to the man.

“Now, let’s talk about this relationship.” Eric said with a little smile. “When did that happen?”

“Uh, somewhere between dinner and breakfast I guess.” Jensen let out an amused chuckle. “5 in the morning.”

Eric raised an eyebrow and smirked. “I have the impression this is gonna be an interesting story.”

~~

Jared had known from the beginning that working with Jeff wasn’t going to be easy, but after two weeks he had to admit he liked the man, even when he was yelling at him for burning the pancakes or the hamburgers. Which meant half the time.
So yeah, Jared wasn’t exactly the best cook in the world, but he was starting to learn. And thank God Jeff was a patient man.

When he got home he heard Jensen was in the kitchen, probably preparing dinner.

“Hey, it’s me.” Jared announced himself from the doorstep of the apartment, not wanting to get another knife almost thrown at him.

“Took you long enough!”

“Look who’s wearing the pink apron now.”

Jared grinned as he entered the kitchen and Jensen turned, narrowing his eyes.

“Can’t find the other one. Know something ‘bout it?”

“Me?” Jared faked his best innocent tone as he put the groceries bags on the table. Yeah, so he might have hidden the other one, but he was glad he did, because Jensen looked downright adorable with the pink one.

“You’re evil.” Jensen muttered, as if he could read Jared’s thoughts.

The taller boy laughed and reached him, surrounding Jensen’s waist with his arms. “And you’re cute.”

“Cute?” Jensen asked, turning his head slightly to look at him with a frown.

“In a really manly way, don’t worry.” Jared replied with a solemn tone, then his grin was back and he kissed the side of Jensen’s neck. “But you’re still cute.”

Jensen laughed and shook his head, silently disappointed when Jared broke the embrace to go back to the groceries bags.

The doorbell rang and Jensen frowned, wiping his hands in the apron and taking it off before going to see who it was. Through the peephole he saw a black older man and a white blond guy standing patiently and he frowned, worried. He opened the door, leaving the chain closed.

“Can I help you?” Jensen asked, looking warily at the two guys.

“Mr. Ackles?” The older guy asked, his expression serious. Jensen simply nodded. “Detective Brooks, this is detective McDonald, LAPD, we’d like to ask you a couple of questions, if that’s okay.” They both showed him their badge and Jensen’s frown deepened.

“Sure, come in.” Jensen closed the door and opened the chain, then let the two men in. “Questions about what?”

“Your car accident in Seattle.” McDonald replied with his hands in his pockets.

Jared entered the living room and his expression turning from curious to worried when he saw the two guys. “Jen, everything’s okay?”

“Yeah, they’re cops.” At that Jared nodded, still visibly worried. “I left the sauce on the stove, can you…”

“Sure.” Jared replied, throwing a last glance to the detectives and going back to the kitchen.

Jensen turned towards the guys and gestured them to sit down, waiting for a question. “I don’t remember much of the accident, but I’ll tell you what I know.”

“The car that caused your accident was found here in LA, last night.” McDonald explained, looking straight at Jensen. “Someone stole it here in town a couple of months ago, and now it’s back here.”

Jensen’s breath hitched as he realized that he didn’t even know how the car accident happened. They hadn’t told him much and when he’d woken up it had been the last of his thoughts. All he knew about it was that he’d gone off road and hit his head very hard. “By caused you mean…?”

McDonald looked surprised by that question and Brooks frowned. “Your car was drove off road by a blue van. And since it showed up back here in LA we have reason to suspect it wasn’t just an accident.”

“You mean…” Jensen hesitated, his breath hitching slightly. “You mean someone tried to kill me?”

“It’s possible.” McDonald answered with a sorry tone. “You know anyone who might have any reason to do that?”

“I…I’m not sure.” Jensen’s eyes fixed on the floor as he tried to stay calm. “The accident caused me a memory loss. I don’t remember much of the last four years, almost nothing.”

“So you have no idea?”

Yeah, he had an idea, but how could he tell them without telling what had happened with Nathan? And why would Nathan try to kill him? It made no sense.

“No, I’m sorry.” Jensen looked up at them and his gaze locked with McDonald’s thoughtful one.

“Okay, we’ll let you know if we found something. Be careful.” Brooks stood from the couch and his partner did the same.

They started to walk towards the door, then McDonald stopped. “In case you need help, or remember something.” He handed Jensen a little card and addressed him a smile.

Jensen looked down at the card in his hands. “Chase McDonald?” He asked, surprised. He knew that name, he was an artist. “That Chase McDonald? The sculptor?”

“In my free time.” McDonald replied, his smile widening. “Call me if you need help.”

And with that the two guys were gone and Jensen locked the door, putting the card in his pocket and forgetting about the sculptures.

“Jen, what’s goin’ on?” Jared reached him and looked at him in the eye, seeing confusion and worry. “Jen?”

“The car accident…someone might have tried to kill me.” Jensen muttered, not really conscious he said that out loud.

“Oh God…” Jared pulled him in a hug, feeling Jensen’s arms surround his chest and clench on his shoulders like he needed it to stay upright.

~~

A/N: Troubles aren’t over. Actually, it’s just the beginning. So yeah, feel free to hate me for what I’m putting these two guys through.
Also, L.A. Heat was one of the shows I watched growing up, so Chase MacDonald was kind of one of my childhood heroes…so, that’s why I put him in the story. I’ve always wanted to put him in one of my stories, but I never found the right one. Until this one. So yeah, that’s why I chose these two detectives. XD
I’m pretty sure this is the most useless A/N ever, so I’ll just go now
Let me know what you think about the news and thanks again for reading and commenting, you’re making me a happier person.
See you next time!
