Mine are in no particular order:
1) I might as well say, right from the jump: it wasn't my usual kind of job.
I like to work alone, in my own clean, silent, well-lit laboratory, where the climate is controlled and everything I need is right at hand.
2) The first time I read the ad, I choked and cursed and spat and threw the paper to the floor. Since even this didn't seem to be quite enough, I snatched it up, marched into the kitchen, and shoved it into the trash.

5) They came near the fierce mountain and saw the mountain's breath spread across the plain, turning it gray. It was safe to cross, because the mountain was not roaring today, but it was nevertheless a marvel.
6) On Tuesday the freighter steamed through the Straits of Gibraltar and for five days plowed eastward through the Mediterranean, past islands and peninsulas rich in history, so that on Saturday night the steward advised Dr. Cullinane, "If you wish an early sight of the Holy Land you must be up at dawn." The steward was Italian and was reluctant to use the name Israel. For him, good Catholic that he was, it would always be the Holy Land.
7)Today: a perfect day for thinking back. It must all be said, now, before time takes an axe to my memory.Outside, on the balcony the air begins to chill. The season changes. I walked out to the balcony to write. It was difficult to begin.
8) My name is Odd Thomas, though in this age when fame is the altar at which most people worship, I am not sure why you should care who I am or that I exist.
9) That we may be better acquainted with our colony of New Spain, of its peculiarities, its riches, the people who possessed it, and the beliefs, rites, and ceremonies which they heretofore held, we wish to be informed of all matters appertaining to the Indians during their existence in that land before the coming of our liberating forces, ambassadors, evangels, and colonizers.
10)Percale, ottoman, faille, bengaline, lawn, batiste, poplin, voile, pongee, taffeta, chambray, limbric, broadcloth, chiffon, cretonne, lingette, muslin, sheeting, organdy, gingham, flannel, calico, cambric, grosgrain, repp, tapestry, dimity, china silk, crepe de chine, challis, madras, rib...What do these textiles have in commmom? They are very different fabrics: some of them are heavy, some light, some of them sheer, some opaque, some of them stiff, some soft. In spite of their obvious difference, they have one important characteristic in common: they are all woven in plain weave, the interlacement, according to Fairchild's Dictionary of Textiles "used in 80% of all woven fabrics."
Good luck!
