When I was a big part of the star wars fan community we often ventured to Mel's Diner in San Francisco and I remember one conversation of Dorks vs nerds. We were trying to figure out what we were. We came to the conclusion that dorks are scary people who are completely engulfed in a fandom or hobby so much that they loose their own identity. While nerds, which we later determined we are, are people who have a common fandom or hobby but still have a sense of self. For example, my star wars friends and I can dress up as Jedi and then go to the local bar to talk about hot ass or how much we love nachos or perhaps we want to see the new super hero movie together and arrange a time for dinner and a movie. While dorks only gather for certain events ie) games, or cons and not much else socially.
I am very grateful for my nerd friends because while I am out of the convention circle since I became pregnant they have all called, emailed or arranged to see me and have given me their well wishes. While I've been noticing Greg trying to get support from his friends and haven't gotten much of it. It makes me mad to see him hurt but then again he's 30 and can handle it. It just proves my theory about Dorks vs Nerds. It's ok to be on either side, just don't have high expectations.
