So, despite interference from The Cat with the Stinky Behind, I managed to finish reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo--which I think is only appropriately named if the title character is also The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, because she only seems to comprise about 40% protagonist share, 20% of which is participatory in the core story. Movie-wise might be different, since so much of the book is Vanger family history and likely glazed over, but I haven't seen it yet to say. *If* I go that route, I'll see Movies 1 and 2, then read Book 2. After that, I'll decide what order I want to see/read 3.
I say if, because I went into the book thinking, "Man, I'd rather watch the movie" until about 1/3 way through, then I was thinking, "Eugh, I don't know if I want to see the movie." The why has to do with the story's core, which is violent (sex) crimes against womenPEOPLE. I get that, and I get why the trilogy must be popular, but... I really don't need to read anything THAT descriptive =(
[I'm not a prude--it's just that I don't feel like, oh, the bad guy deserves what he's getting for that because to me rape isn't something that can be avenged.]
[[even though I've written about this very thing, but I also kinda hint at it, instead of actually... well... leaving nothing to the imagination]]
[[[though admittedly part of that is psychological--done correctly, NOT showing what's scary is more frightening than showing it]]]
Also, my [ex-]co-worker had mentioned the book as starting slow in order to establish the scene and so on. Fine, but... she didn't mention it also ENDS slow... T_T I mean, okay, revenge was had. I don't NEED to read a play-by-play/How To manual. I actually found myself skipping like twenty pages, just because it wasn't ENDING when it ended. I guess he was doing the Philip Reeve thing where characters that don't come back have all their loose ends tied up, which is fine, but it took S-O L-O-N-G that I stopped caring.
*shrug*
Basically, okay if you want to read lots of conspiracy shenanigans, but pass if sex crime injustice makes you cry. 'Cause reading it will underscore the fact that THIS SHIT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, and the bad guy[/gal] is NOT getting his[/her] due. Though this aspect is trivialized by everyone sleeping with the main guy.
EVERYONE.

Also, did another puzzle, the second/last one I had sitting on the shelf unfinished:
12.5 hours [stopping on account of would needlessly have been up to 6a otherwise]:
16 hours:
If this is going to be a habit, I need a few mystery/challenge puzzles. You know, the ones that don't have the photo on the cover and/or no "edge" pieces. Those are awesome, 'cause I feel smarter when I'm done, vs. I have a nice picture that's broken up by jigsaw edges.
