3296: 80s Babies

Oct 27, 2009 00:41

BGN. Ungh. Stuff. Race, Dominion, and T2R Sw. Win, lose, weird-assed tiebreak [whoever had fewest turns taken]. Apparently Sundays are better for Jon, but who knows when plans will actually materialize even when everyone's free =p Also, we ordered delivery from Manhattan, then Dan came home and ordered delivery from Manhattan... I have to wonder what was going through their minds after getting that ^^;

I keep wanting to play at least the first bit of S&M for peeps, but I'm pretty sure only Thomas care-cares, and he's seen it =p Also, YouTube 9_9 ["Here I go again. On my own."]

Nano's frustrating because, for instance, my story for this year seems daunting but--as I write it out in my head--I may not actually have enough story there to fill out the month without the extensive research that will make it viable. Yes, they say make something up to fill the space, but the plot walks a thin line of continuity as it is without trying to make it totally believable.

Not that I could ANYWAY, considering the material, but believable in that way that readers fall into the story and WANT to believe it's possible. Harry Potter: totally cool depiction of modern-day wizardry/witchcraft that makes kids [and adults] want to go to Hogwarts. Gifts [Ursula K. le Guin]: ...bad starter, of her works =p

I just can't wrap my brain around the idea of people naturally born to be WMDs, with the ability to kill/maim/poison with but an angry look. My sympathy for the families of those with such "gifts" goes down drastically with the unbalancing of the "Godmode" ratio I mentioned before but can't remember where specifically and would rather not spend the next hour finding. The twist doesn't matter--the very existence of a world populated with such a natural imbalance is preposterous, and the way she developed the story didn't do anything to unbalance the absurdity.

So I've been struggling to think of things to mend the gaps, but the overwhelming majority of my thoughts in writing drift toward the Firsts--the magic moments that appear in every remotely romantically-geared story. You know, Boy meets Girl, Boy works up the gumption to talk to Girl, Boy goes out with Girl, Boy fights over Girl with other Boys, Boy kisses Girl and it is AWESOME, Boy and Girl have HOT HOT SEXENGS...* --it kind of deteriorates from there ¬_¬;

*Alternate genderings may be substituted, though I'm not sure if gender applied to people has been done commonly enough to piss off linguaphile purists to throw up their hands and say, "OKAY, OKAY, PEOPLE CAN HAVE GENDER AS WELL AS SEX, SURE WHY NOT."

[...if words have gender, do they have SAFE gender?]

The problem is the First Kiss, Marriage, and SpawnBABBIES are really the three major relationship peaks without getting into external conflict, so anyone romance-minded is going to try to keep reliving [reviling?] those three by default. Hell, it's hard for anyone who isn't a total misanthrope to NOT want to relive those, even if they technically haven't happened yet.

--which presents the theory that this is one of the main unifiers in stories, why there's always some romantic interest even in Die Hard kind of stuff. Not everyone's going to want to see a movie that's just "the explosions win!" but most people have at least some degree of identification with finding True Love.

Because, at the end of the day, it's all about getting a tax deduction. [insert link here to some Craigslist ad with woman seeking man to be sperm donor to have kid solely for tax purposes--because babies are FREE to own and maintain the rest of the year, right?] Hrm.

Two items I can't add to my Amazon list for a coupla reasons:
- all dese bookz
- OLD BRUCE WOO [but mostly McGinnis]

I will have these SOMEDAY, SOMEHOW *shakes fist* ...was hoping to keep further spending this year to a little less than originally planned, tho =/ but... never works out that way, does it? 'less my folks are feeling ultra-generous... T_T

booky, internety, thunk, writey, ihatemoney, bother, whatamitaggingexactly, grammar, boardgamey, terminology
