In a bit of a DURP moment, I started reading up on Ruby on Rails at work--for the rest of the week that I've been told is as much work as is left to do there until such a time as NIMH decides they can have me start =p It's like learning a whole other language! 9_9
The main problem is I can't execute things as I read about them, nor can I visualize what to do with code as I read about it. Mind, the problem I've had learning any non-visual coding language is trying to figure out how to use what's basically the long way of doing math--I recall reading through the entire manual of a language recommended for web use [I think this was SimpleNet but I can't remember exactly] and thinking, "Well, I already HAVE a calculator..." T_T So it's no surprise I gave up on that a bit quickly.
I'd like to learn how to do even some rudimentary dynamic coding, vs. the rigid basic HTML I know by heart, if only so I can fix the issues I'm having with
Gallery |=/ you know--little stuff like how it spontaneously DELETED one of my galleries for some reason... 9_9 The issue is keeping the focus to learn ONE thing.
Of course, it's the same problem learning Ruby as it is learning almost anything new: Without immersive application, it feels like a steep learning curve to learn something I may not even use. I do try, but it's too easy to get defeated when it takes 100 hours to learn something I use for a one-hour project. I'm sure I'd use X, Y, and Z more, but when the sum of I want to do what amounts to the entire alphabet, it's painfully difficult to prioritize...
*broken record*
Chuckles was laughing at Gourmand(?) today about records, incidentally--how "No one calls them 'record players' anymore, they're turntables." Funny, I don't recall my folks having a "turntable" to play their vinyl albums 9_9
[Speaking of, it seems like my co-workers spent THE WHOLE DAY watching this Michael Jackson memorial service thing. Fine, whatever, I guess it stretches out how much of the piddling work's left for me to do this week... *shrug*]
I also thought of a riddle, but I haven't road-tested it yet to exhaust all the incorrect answers... well, let's see:There is a word in English that is plural. Add an S to the end of it, and the word is not plural. What is the word?
"its," "the word," and "not plural" aren't correct answers 9_9 although, as I said, I haven't exhausted the "wrong" answers yet =p Alternate phrasing also accepted! ^^;
