I've heard people use "I... have to iron the cat." when they don't want to do $thing, but don't really give a shit about making up a plausible excuse.

Even that's preferable to saying "yes" but meaning no [second point mentioned]. At least it's making oneself clear. My support for hair-washing is that it's obvious what it means--like "My dog ate my homework"--vs. the complaints that it's a stupid excuse and why do people [read: women] use it anymore. Well, I've explained why.
