So, with Japan approaching at the rapid speed of... time... passing... I finally got a response from my folks about advice or what have you, and my father thinks I should just save my money for retirement, though he recognizes that it's my decision in the matter

If you have a retirement plan going, you're already doing better than a large majority of people who haven't done anything like that and think that they can rely on Social Security. Anyway, I don't see a problem with a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan. I've traveled to other countries too, and it was worth doing.
