SUNSHINE
August 18 2007, Hollywood Theater

Damn it all to hell.

This is NOT a good movie. At all. It's almost agonizing to sit through. The space-porn is really good, as are the computer graphics, but... it's just crap. The script is nighmarishly horrible, and suffers both from scientific errors so egregious and unbelievable that I could barely concentrate on anything else, and severe bad sci-fi cliche as a matter of course. AND it's slow. And it doesn't know what kind of movie it's trying to be. It attempts several things - the slow-moving "profound"/ "science fiction as metaphor for human condition" 2001-style meditation, an ARMAGEDDON-style actioner, and a space-bound, claustrophobic slasher film a la ALIEN. None of these things works at all. At all.

The actors whose time is wasted here is a heartbreaking list - sublime hotness Hiroyuki Sanada, Michelle Yeoh (! What the fuck!), Chris Evans as the strangely and inexplicably homicidal asshole, Rose Byrne, and of course, most painfully, Cillian Murphy, who gives his all but can't save this stinker.

It's all just... so stupid and bad and wrong and Danny Boyle and Alex Garland must have been high on some very, very good drugs to think that this movie worked at all, on any level. I'm shocked that it's gotten as highly reviewed as it has. If it wasn't for some of the beautiful space imagery, I might have been tempted to ask for my money back. And I love sci-fi, even bad sci-fi... but this...

scifi, hotness viewing, theater, eye candy, don't bother, wtf, drama, bummer
