THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
December 28, 29, and 31 2010, DVD, home living room, Netflix
Hmmm... interesting film. Good, even great, once I was able to get over how incredibly slow, and often ham-handed it is. Anchored by strong performances by Brad Pitt as the titular Jesse and Casey Affleck as the... well, other titular Bob Ford, a complicated and twisty and tragic tale of celebrity, obsession, simmering desire become resentment, and stupidity. One of the greater casts ever, though: Garrett Dillahunt, Sam Shepard, Mary Louise Parker, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider, and even miss Zooey Deschanel manages to make her way in at the end. If only this movie wasn't so goddamn slow, and a lot of the important beats given with a sledgehammer instead of a feather.
