GIA
July 3 and 4 2010, .avi, own
No I really do own this movie. Just on VHS. And my VCR is being flaky. And my pal Amanda insisted that it was time for me to see it. I'm glad she did.
Somehow, the knowledge was hidden from me that Elizabeth Mitchell, who will forever in my mind be "Juliet from Lost", co-stars in this made-for-cable hyperbummer 80s potboiler. In other words, GIA heavily features hot, young, naked, well-fed Angelina Jolie having mad sexytimes with a hot, young, naked, well-fed Juliet from Lost, and in other words, my head totally exploded.
Besides that, GIA is a very well made, very well-written (co-scripted by Less than Zero author Jay McInerney), lovely-to-look-at tragic melodrama about "the first supermodel" (which undoubtedly begs Twiggy to look askance at HBO's marketing department) and her rise from humble beginnings as a Philadelphia punk teenager to the glitzy, glamorous, drug-fueled pinnacle of the fashion world, and the inevitable fall thanks to smack, disillusionment, and garden-variety insanity. The love story between Gia and Juliet from Lost's Linda adds a poignant tone to the whole proceedings, though; Jolie can rock some crazy obsessive love, and her larger frame highlighted the clumsy boyishness of her physical affection. Gia is such a total man it's not even funny, and Angie knows just what to do. And oh, yeah, she's horrifically good-looking, though not in a way that has ever personally resonated with me. I love me some Angie, but I do not and have not ever wanted to get with her. Elizabeth Mitchell, though, after this? Yeah. She looks good nude in the shower.
Mercedes Ruehl is excellent as the pushy, annoying, aggravatingly emotionally clueless mom Kathleen; Faye Dunaway is just a bit scary but maternal as the head of the Wilhemina Modeling Agency; and that's pretty much it for notable actors unless you count another striking "Hey! It's" occurrence when Adina Rhodes shows up, and is oddly enough not this time playing True Blood's Tara's mom. Weird!
Anyway, great soundtrack, fabulous 80s fashion visuals, an excellent Jolie performance, and Juliet from Lost in the altogether. Sign me up!
