(500) DAYS OF SUMMER
January 23 (?) 2010, OnDemand, Myrlin & Jeremy's living room

Oops; I forgot this one. We demanded it while having a dinner one night (that's why I don't remember the exact day; it was a Saturday, I know, so it might have been the 16th) and it was a pleasant experience.

I absolutely adore Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and I very much like Zooey Deschanel, and I love vintage clothes and awkward, reference-laden conversation, so I have all of the things necessary to have enjoyed this movie. And I did. It's definitely one of those movies that is so close to being a portrait of my actual life that it's simultaneously comfortable and un-, what with its love of badly done karaoke, pining after impossibly perfect people only to sort of have them for a while, just enough so that it poisons everything else in life, having relationships where most of the time is spent miserable and confused, using Star Wars references as clarifying metaphors, etc. etc. It's true; it's not a love story. It's a finely drawn portrait of people like me, at my age, at this point in time (or at least, in 2007 - just with way less weed smoking, which is the only thing missing from this film. I mean, seriously, as if Summer wouldn't have totally whipped out a bong in the shape of Gandalf or made out of a My Little Pony at some point). Weird.

It does have a wonderful musical interlude where Joe gets to cut a rug to the tune of "You Make My Dreams" by Hall & Oates. It is about as iconic as it gets, and I hope it has introduced a new generation to the wonders of Hall & Oates. It's not just for the olds!

I loved it. And yet it's not a film I figure I need to own, or even watch over and over again; to quote Pee-Wee Herman, "I lived it."

illustrative soundtrack, comedy, hotness viewing, indie, romantic, cable, instant classic, awesome
