What's It Gonna Be? [closed]

St. Mungo's was buzzing in a way Jemma hadn't seen in a long time. But then, it wasn't every day a Muggle was taken into the magical hospital, and it certainly wasn't every day it was due to a bloody werewolf attack. She couldn't imagine how helpless Rowan must have felt. Even a powerful wizard would be struggling, she knew. Jemma had no idea how ( Read more... )

There really wasn't anything more important to Drew than his family, knowing just how much they relied on each other, especially after his father had passed away. His Uncle Sebastian had truly become the father figure that Andrew and Max needed in their lives, not even taking a pause when it came to father-son activities and making sure his nephews felt just as included and welcomed as Jonah did. But then again, he was Catherine's big brother. He had always been there for her in ways that she knew she couldn't live with out.

It was his Aunt Rowan, a muggle in a strange and magical family, that went beyond the call of duty for them. She picked up the slack when Catherine had to go back to work full time while Arya and Drew were still in school, leaving the twins with out any supervision (and everyone knew that it was the twins who had needed a responsible adult more than any of the other cousins). It was clear that she had quickly surpassed the roll of sister-in-law with Catherine and moved right into the zone of being an actual sister.

The Kirkes were grateful every single day for the Linney's, growing stronger and closer each passing year as the kids grew into adults.

It really was no surprise that Drew had sprinted to the hospital the moment he had heard about the attack, pacing restlessly in the halls for any sort of update.

But now he had his own branch of the family to take care of, torn between his aunt and the news that was waiting in the next ward.

"No, it's okay-" he told her, running his fingers through his hair. It was clear that he wasn't all there, the worry and stress following him down the hall.

"This is exciting. We've been waiting for this."

She didn't argue with him.

Truth be told, she didn't really want to do this alone. No matter how much she'd be alright with it if he were to stay with his aunt, she needed him here with her. And if he wanted to stay, well, she was going to be that much more grateful.

"Alright-" she said, pressing a firm kiss to his cheek.

Once they reached the Birthing Ward, a young Healer took their name before rushing off to find Hestia. Jemma had seen the papers, had known was what going on, but she'd never have been prepared for how harried Hestia looked when she approached them.

"Oh, Jemma, today's a big day!" she exclaimed, smiling as brightly as she could. "Are you two ready?"

"Um, yeah?" she ventured, sparing Drew a glance.

Drew glanced back down at Jemma, pulling a smile onto his own expression- though it wasn't nearly as easy or excited as it should have been.

There was a small pang of guilt, something twisting up his stomach, knowing that this should have been their day. He just had other things on his mind.

"Yes, ready," he said, looking back over at Hestia.

Hestia offered them both a small, warm smile and it instantly soothed Jemma's nerves. It was a wonder she could do that, always finding a way to relax her during their appointments. She gestured her head toward the white curtain behind them, letting them pass through into the patient room.

Jemma knew the routine by now, positioning herself on the table, her legs swinging over the edge.

"We'll just check a few of your vitals, see how your heart rate and blood sugar are and then we'll be able to see the gender!"

She smiled, nodding, waiting as Hestia checked her pulse.

She glanced at Drew with a hopeful look, knowing she'd owe him big time for dragging him away from his family for this.

There really wasn't anything that could have kept Drew from coming with Jemma today, even if he was having a little bit of a hard time focusing.

He didn't want to be the type of father that wasn't around and his responsibilities had already started.

"Fantastic," he said, rubbed Jemma's arm as she settled into the position.

When her blood sugar and vitals cleared, Jemma just as healthy as she was the last time she was in the office, Hestia motioned for her to sit back, her hands reaching to lift the light sweater Jemma had worn that day. Her hands were cool, gooseflesh rippling on her skin as she waited in anticipation for the spell to begin.

"And you're sure we'll be able to find out today?" she asked, trying not to sound as anxious as she felt.

"We should," Hestia told her. "Just as long as both babies aren't hiding behind each other-"

She laughed, offering Jemma another smile.

"Just relax, Jemma, everything looks great-"

Now Drew was sitting on the edge of his seat now, knowing that this was the part they had been waiting for.

There wasn't any doubt that Jemma would be as healthy as she could be. The two of them had read all the baby books they could find and then they had read all the ones that Skylar had found on their behalf.

"This is it?" he asked, reaching for Jemma's head.

"I mean, we want to know, right?"

"Yes-" Jemma said, turning to glance up at Drew, not being able to help the wide smile that tugged at her lips. Above everything else, she wanted to know her babies were healthy, and she desperately wanted to know what they were having.

Hestia handed her the small, familiar vial and Jemma took the potion in one gulp.

She watched as Hestia took the wand and hovered it over her stomach, Jemma buzzing with anticipation.

A few moments passed, Jemma's eyes flickering back to Drew while they waited, Hestia taking a step closer to the screen hanging in the center of the room.

"Well, Jemma, Drew- it looks like you're going to have to find a boy and a girl name."

A boy and a girl.

Drew coughed, his eyes widening as he studied the picture of their children covering there against the wall. As far as he was concerned they were having two little beans but well, Hestia assured them that they were having human children.

A boy and a girl.

"Wow-" he said, swallowing hard as he turned back to Jemma.

Just like Wren and Max.

"A boy and a girl?"

There were tears welling in Jemma's eyes when Drew looked back at her. A hint of a smile tugged at her lips as she brought her hand up to wipe at them with slight laughter.

"Well, would you look at that-" she said, shifting so that she was sitting up a bit better, watching the two figures floating on the screen. A little boy and a little girl.

And they were theirs.

"That's amazing."

Drew felt a swell in his chest as he noticed the tears building up in Jemma's big, gorgeous eyes.

It felt like it was all hitting him for the first time, all over again and more intensely than the day she had delivered the news. That day had felt so long ago now-

"Yeah, amazing-" he agreed, squeezing her hand.

"A boy and a girl."

"David and Emmeline," Jemma said, her voice quiet.

Those were the names they had settled on, weren't they? She gripped at Drew's hand, bringing his fist to her lips and pressing a light kiss against his knuckles.

"We'll get this image printed for you," Hestia said, then. "Should only take a few minutes in the darkroom and you can add to your collection-"

Jemma laughed.

"Yes, that would be wonderful-"

She always appreciated when Hestia gave them a minute alone. She watched as the Healer exited the room.

"Drew- can you believe it?"

"Almost. I sort of believe it-" he said, running his fingers through his hair as he took a deep, heavy breath.

It actually was almost as mind boggling as the idea of having twins at all.

The two of them had spent so many nights up teasing each other about having two girls or two boys, picking favorites, and spoiling them both. But it was moments like these, when he could actually see their little images up on the wall like that, that he started to realize that they were going to be here soon.

This was the reason he had wanted to come.

"David and Emmeline. We already have the named worked out-"

"We didn't know we'd need both at the time," she laughed, feeling a little exasperated by the whole thing. There were moments when the idea of having a child was overwhelming enough, but two? She couldn't help but grin, though, knowing that they had somehow managed to create two healthy babies.

And they would be here sooner than they realized.

"At least now we know what to do with the nursery-" she paused, brow furrowing. "Nurseries, I guess."

At least they had already come to terms with needing two of everything- cribs, strollers, car seats, clothes. Now they'd just need to make sure they had separate bedrooms.

He could manage that-

"I guess we need to really start house hunting?" he offered, rubbing at the back of his neck.

"The kids could stay in the name room for a while at least, if we're still settling in-"

"I don't think they'd notice anyway," she said, chewing on the inside of her cheek.

She had a feeling they'd both be staying in the bedroom with Jemma and Drew while she was still nursing. She almost groaned inwardly at the idea of nursing twins. She licked at her lips as her eyes focused on the screen in front of them.

"Let's hold off until your aunt is out of here," she told him, offering him a slight smile. "We have time to wait for things to settle down a little bit-"

She hoped.
