Rearview mirrors

May 05, 2009 16:14

Clouded vision, clouded skies,
clear intentions and you’re walking away.
Summer sighs a final whisper
Of sea salt air, cheap wine, and late nights.

I held the world that sun-soaked season,
just as you held my heart and every reason
not to let this go.
But sometimes the best of reasons are lost in flight
before they can ever reach the ground.

Your shrinking form along the shoreline
reminds me that this will someday fade.
Like the receding sands beneath my toes,
you pulled away.

I’m left alone
on this beach that just bore witness to love lost.
Maybe tomorrow
someone will find what I lost
today.

My soles are heavy in the thick sand
as I retreat to my parked car and climb inside.
The leather sticks to my skin.
Your scent clings to my clothes.

I check my rearviews.
‘Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.’
But you seem further away than ever.

Stick shift.
Reverse lights.
Accelerate.
The engine revs.
My heart stalls.
And I’m left wishing that loving and leaving were worlds apart.
