Institutions that do not allow critical thinking make me cringe. that's why when I read
this article
in the Tucson Citizen this morning I nearly spit out my soy milk.
I get really nervous about religious groups who target college
students. It is a very vulnerable time being away from home and I
do understand the need to feel a sense of community. However,
these groups are so so...cultlike.
In order for organized religion to succeed, they must make people
believe that they need it. To do that, a person must lose faith
in themselves and then believe that the religion will provide the
faith/questions they do not have. You have to accept this faith
without question or the religion will begin to fail. If you begin
to have questions, the whole system could fall apart. An institution
that discourages young people from asking questions (especially about
what is right and wrong) should be feared.
This is why I found the Da Vinci Code so fasicinately. What if
there was a secret (such as Jesus marrying Mary M. and having a kid)
that if known would change everything? Would people go at any
length to keep that secret a secret? This is probably why the
Vatican was so against this book....If enough people begin to question,
will the secret be in fact declared true?
