So. It's been forever since I've written here. I would give an update on what I've been up to...but maybe that'll be later. Anyway. I was watching the news earlier today and this really upset me.   The worst part of it is that those of us that adhere to the church's teachings look like the bad guys.  We're the sexist, women hating, in favor of the ( Read more... )

Ya. Two thoughts...

As the article says, "[they] will proclaim *themselves* priests and four deacons. (emphasis mine)" That whole sentence is flawed...it completely ignores Apostolic succession, laying on of hands, the Sacrament, etc. The problem as I see it in this country is that people make "women priests" into a feminist issue instead of looking at the unique roles of each of the genders. Of course women can do the same actions as men can in the priesthood-- no one is saying that they can't. But it isn't about whether or not they can do the actions (women can open doors by themselves too) but whether or not it fits tradition/how the Spirit is guiding the Church.

That being said, I'd be careful to say "women were not meant to be priests" because technically, women not being priests is tradition with a little "t" rather than a big "T" meaning that tomorrow if the Pope was inspired that women could be ordained, then they could. Now I personally believe that women priests don't make sense from a spiritual standpoint (some of the things you mentioned above), but conceivably it could be changed (but I hope it isn't).

Anywho, thanks for posting!

It's something I've always been a little confused about. The little "t" make it difficult ground to navigate. I can understand the confusion people have. I mean, New Testament is filled with women in the ministry of Jesus. I did a paper on women in the early Church, and you can find a few instances where women are literally refered to as a deconess. I think there is a huge distinction between deaconess and priestess, however. It's definitely an interesting debate.

little t = the decision is up to those with the keys
big T = not negotiable
