chapter 9 10. Nino: Of clay and Ohno Satoshi.
It was annoying, the way Sho managed to always pop up when he didn’t want him there. But Ohno visibly perked up when he saw Sho.
Ohno... now he was interesting. Nino couldn’t exactly say why, but just seeing him looking so lost and clutching his sketchbook, both the boy and the book covered in orange juice, had made Nino like him. It was one of those feelings that Nino had learned not to question. It was always a lot better just to go with it and not worry about it too much.
“Where do you usually buy your art supplies?” Nino asked, glancing at the boy walking next to him. They had just left Aiba on the train station and Jun still had classes. Sho was nowhere in sight, he had told them that he had soccer practice. It suited Nino just fine. It wasn’t like he had suddenly started to like the boy, even if Ohno thought he was a nice guy.
“There’s a shop near my home,” Ohno said. “This way.”
They walked along, Nino swinging his schoolbag carelessly, back and forth, back and forth. He followed Ohno, few steps behind him. The weather was good, warm, and completely different from yesterday’s rainy and cold day. The neighbourhood they were walking through looked nice. Very cosy and very unlike from the apartment building where he was living. The houses were a bit older, the roofs a lot lower and people looked a lot friendlier. They passed a playground that was filled with small children, laughing loudly and running around. Ohno glanced at them and smiled, but his smile was a little bit vacant, like his mind was somewhere else.
Nino caught up with Ohno. “What are you thinking?” he asked, peering curiously at the older boy.
“Hmm. Clay,” Ohno said.
”Huh?”
“Oh, I meant... for sculptures, you know,” Ohno said, blushing. “I’ve been meaning to try making sculptures. I should buy some clay.”
“Right,” Nino grinned.
The store they entered was small and crammed with all kinds of art supplies. Paints, paper, canvases, inks... everything any artist would ever need. Nino followed Ohno in, curious about this world that was completely new to him. He had never been in such a place before.
Ohno greeted the middle-aged woman sitting behind the counter. She smiled to him and the corners of her eyes crinkled. “Hello there, Satoshi. I haven’t seen you around for a while. How are you?” she said.
”Fine,” Ohno said, smiling fondly back at the woman. “Busy with school.”
“What can I do for you then, dear?” the woman asked.
“I need clay. I think I’m going to try some sculpting. I don’t exactly know what I should get besides that...” Ohno and the woman vanished into the back of the shop, leaving Nino alone. He felt a little bit neglected. It had been like both of them had completely forgotten his existence.
While waiting for Ohno to resurface, Nino looked around the shop. He leafed through some sketchbooks, wondering which one he should buy. He had no idea what was good and what was not.
“Probably the more expensive, the better...” he muttered to himself, looking at one with black, hard covers and enough pages that he couldn’t imagine anyone ever running out of them.
Ohno would, though. Probably.
Nino shrugged. He’d take this one. At least it looked somewhat accident proof. It looked like it wouldn’t get ruined unless Ohno dropped it into the ocean.
He grinned to himself. It might be that someday Ohno would be thinking about clay or paints or maybe about the exact shade of blue the sky was and he would just walk straight off the pier and into the ocean.
Could happen.
“Ninomiya-kun?” a voice spoke right next to him, making him jump in surprise. He had completely missed Ohno’s return.
“You got enough clay?” he asked.
Ohno nodded, clutching a large bag to his chest. He was beaming happily and Nino resisted a sudden urge to hug him.
He showed him the sketchbook instead.
“Will this do? As the replacement?” he asked, carefully watching Ohno’s reaction.
Ohno looked at the sketchbook, frowned and put down his clay. He took the book from Nino and opened it, rubbing his fingers over the first, flawlessly white page. He glanced at Nino.
”Nino... this is at least three times more expensive than the one I had,” he said, blushing slightly.
Nino felt a tingle running down his spine. It was the first time Ohno used that nickname of his. It had been ‘Ninomiya-kun’ for the whole day, it hadn’t mattered how many times he had told him to just call him Nino. He smiled widely at the embarrassed boy. “I thought that it means that it will also be three times harder for Aiba to destroy,” he laughed.
“But... it’s too expensive.”
“Don’t worry about that, Oh-chan,” Nino smiled and then he also blushed. He hadn’t meant to call Ohno that. It had been just a slip. They hardly knew each other. He was sure that the boy would be very offended.
But Ohno didn’t seem like he had even noticed.
Nino cleared his throat and continued. “I want to buy it for you. And it’s my money so I can do whatever I want with it. I would have only wasted it on baseball cards anyways.”
“I don’t know...” Ohno muttered, frowning. But then he brightened up. “At least let me do something for you in return? Like buy you lunch tomorrow?”
Nino smiled even wider.
“Oh... but you bring your own lunch... Um... something else, then?”
“Okay. You can draw me a picture,” Nino said and went to pay for the sketchbook. The woman looked at him curiously when he grinned at her, but didn’t say anything.
-------
Nino followed Ohno home. It was mostly by accident, but it didn’t seem like Ohno minded, or even really noticed. Nino just trailed behind Ohno, who was suddenly bubbling with excitement over his clay and his plans on what to do with it.
“I think I should try something simple first,” Ohno said. “I haven’t really worked with clay before... Though, there was that time in the art class when we were taught the basics, so I know something about it... Maybe I should try something a bit more complicated... Maybe that way I will know better how much I already know... What do you think, Nino?” Ohno asked and then suddenly came to a stop, falling silent.
“What?” Nino asked, alarmed. He had almost walked straight into Ohno.
Ohno glanced over his shoulder at him. He looked frightened. “Hide!” Ohno said, grabbing him from the wrist and pulling him into a small pharmacy and behind the shelves. He didn’t let go of Nino.
Two boys, wearing the same school uniform as Nino and Ohno, walked past the store. They were both tall and angular and something about them made Nino dislike them instantly. Or maybe it was only because Ohno was shivering next to him, the fingers around his wrist tightening slightly. Ohno was afraid of them and anyone who made him this frightened was definitely not on Nino’s ‘Greatest People Ever’-list.
“I don’t think they saw us,” Nino said to Ohno, when the pair had passed the store.
Ohno let out a long sigh, like he had been holding his breath for the whole time. His hold around Nino’s wrist relaxed, but he still didn’t let go.
Nino didn’t really mind.
”Who were those guys anyway?”
“Just... I don’t really get along with them,” Ohno offered a weak smile to him. “I thought it would be better to hide. Anyway, I live just around the corner. Let’s go.”
Nino frowned. He didn’t like this. He would have to corner Sho tomorrow and ask about it. If those guys were bullying Ohno... Well, he would have to do something about it.
