Third time is the charm...
Third time trying to post this, you all will suffer, because it used to be eloquent, but now I am pissed.
I hate it when I wake up and realize one of my favorite author sucks. They used to be good. Their pages full of interesting characters with good developement and interesting challenges to overcome, with a sprinkling of good old fashioned dry, sarcastic humor. Then they found a formula, their publishers pissed them off so now it's a personal vendetta to prove to them "I Am Gonna Do It Because You Told Me No," or they just had a massive panic attack and killed off all their main characters because they got old.
I'm sure everyone knows I was never into artsy-fartsy books that are supposedly going to change my life by reading them and make mankind love each other and butter both sides of the bread at the same time. I read to get away from things, so I want interesting people in interesting situations. I have always been kind of a fantasy buff. I have just recently delved into the mystery genre and I have just last year discovered the joys of urban fantasy based in an alternative history. The best of both worlds, most of the time.
Anyways, the decline of my bookshelf started with Mercedes Lackey, she found a formula and stopped every all character developement in her books. Every book has the same main character, just switch up the descriptions and genders and their place of birth and they are the same person. She might be better now that she does a bunch of Co-authoring with other people... the books have been getting semi-good reviews... I just have a sour taste in my mouth and I can't sit through one of her books anymore, I get bored too easily.
Then Raymond E. Feist died to me, his series, which spanned generations had a massive ethnic (of sorta) cleansing of most of the series predominant characters...that had... character...and personality. Now all that is left is some of the newer characters that have been shifted into a cameos to support a new cast of characters....that....don't....have.... personality... ugh.
Now, Laura K. Hamillton decided that writing sex scenes was easier than thinking up a plot so now her books are The Marvelous Adventures of Emmaneulle: Gothic Princess. Sorry, I was drawn to the series because of the main character was a strong woman that took no prisoners and kicked ass and had an additude, solving crimes and fighting bad guys. Now the entire series is about how big her massive list of consequetive boyfriend's shlongs are. Gross.
On a brighter note, I discovered a new author due to the joys of amazon.com's "If you like this, you might like this...." recommendations. Unfortunately, she has only written three books, and I went through them in as many days... when I find something good, I should slow down.... Now I need to find someone else to fill my time.
