Yes, this. It just...really sucks all around? We never get to see any of their characters to their full potential. We don't get to see Albion formed. We don't get to see magic returning to the land. It just feels like the whole story has been building up to something, only for it to end right in the middle.
I agree with all the comments about poor Merlin, but I can't help but feel sorry for Arthur as well. Not just because of his death (though that is part of it of course), but I feel like we don't get to see him be the great king he can be. We get hints of it here and there, but TPTB seemed deadset on making Arthur OOCly ignorant at times. Also, I wanted more of him accepting Merlin's magic, of struggling to overturn his father's prejudices against magic. I've been trying to fill that need with fanfiction, but it just isn't the same.
I think the real kicker is that no one won in the end. Arthur might have fought for peace but isn't alive to see it, Merlin is alive but can't share it with Arthur, Gwen is ruling Camelot but without her husband, Morgana was never accepted for who she was, etc. Not one person has a happy ending. And yeah, you could say that's similar to real life, but that's what not what I wanted in my happy, feel-good fantasy show.
(5x13 is still a gorgeous episode though and I don't regret it all)
issy5209 was talking upthread about how she has no idea what the intent of the J's was. Was it really to end like that? Because that is not what I signed on for.
I hated that we never got to see all the things we were promised. It was a betrayal. I felt like the story built and then the driver got high and (or hijacked) and the story veered off into this bizarre territory and I ended up with a broken heart, although that barely begins to describe the effect of the ending on me.
I feel sorry for both Arthur and Merlin as well. Where was Arthur's success? I would have loved to see his acceptance of magic. I wanted more stuff with dragons too, never got that either. In S4 I was sure 4.04 was going to focus on a lost dragon colony. I'd love to start ranting about Aithusa here too, but I'll save that for another time.
And yes, we didn't sign up for this ending. We signed up for happy feel-good fantasy funtimes. We got gut wrenching betrayal in the end instead. Ugh. #allthefeels
I feel like if they wanted to kill Arthur off in the end, they could have done it in a way that didn't feel like a betrayal. Why did they have to choose to do it *that* way (rhetorical question -- no need to answer).
