Decluttering, again

Have unfollowed some folks on Twitter. SO SORRY:( :( I have nothing against you all. I just suck at not using social media. If anyone wants access, just ask ( Read more... )

Here's my trick (not really): I changed my passwords to Twitter, Instragram and Tumblr and now I can't find the paper I wrote them down on. So every time I go to sign in, I feel too lazy to change it. Hence, I haven't looked at any of those for at least a couple of weeks, lol. Personally, I find Twitter way too distracting and kind of depressing to look at all the time anyway and I have nothing to say. Tumblr is mostly pictures, so that's hardly compelling over the long term (to me). Although there are people I used to be friends with on LJ who are only on Twitter or Tumblr now, so it is nice to touch base with those people. Not that tumblr is a place to "touch base" in any substantive way- I should say, see what pictures they like, I suppose.

Sad news re: fandom? What?

LOL. There's an interesting strategy I had not considered:D

Twitter exacerbates my distractability. It is one reason I need to spend less time there. Heck, the main reason, really.

Tumblr is not a huge time sink for me. I can forget about it.

The problem I have is that there are some people who are really only active on one platform and if I want to maintain contact with them, I have to meet them where they are. *sigh* I suppose I should stop trying to chase people down.

Oh, nothing going on now, that I'm aware of. I just know that people have bad/sad experiences in fandom. I do feel lucky to have escaped that so far.

Can't you just not open Twitter? That's what I do. If I do have it open, I constantly notice when new tweets come through and it's extremely distracting. Also, I don't go back and look at past tweets. Well, when you're hardly ever on it, that wouldn't be feasible in any case. I have sometimes done it during periods I used it more.

Yes, I'm starting to do this. It does help A LOT! And not backreading also very helpful. Thank you for the reinforcement:D

I use Tweetdeck for Twitter and without filters I'd slowly go insane. Sometimes I only filter stuff temporarily (f.e. when someone's live commenting on a show I'm not interested in or there's a conversation going on I'd rather not follow), sometimes it's permanent (certain topics/trigger words/URLs).

On Tumblr I sometimes used Tumblr Savior but since I only follow one blog and otherwise only check a handful of blogs manually, I don't have to use it anymore.

On IG I simply unfollow when I find an account annoying.

Since LJ's mostly dead (and refuses to send notifications my way *shakes fist*), I don't need to use filters, although I have a standard setting that shows only posts by 'actual people' on my flist and filters out community posts.

Overall I've always been cautious when it comes to adding people (no matter the platform). In fact, now I almost regret that I've always been so cautious, I think the last time I've added anyone was almost 2 years ago and I just wish there were MORE people on my TL. :P

I usually do not access Twitter from my phone. I really have to figure out how to filter Twitter. It would make my life so much better.

LOL. I don't find Tumblr to be the timesuck that Twitter can be.

What is IG?

;( LJ isn't a huge time suck for me and it doesn't exacerbate my distractability, so I don't feel a huge need to cut back here, although I tend to join comms and then unjoin.

I am a lot more cautious than I used to be, but apparently not cautious enough, or something. Plus there are the people who I've grown apart from. Just zero stuff in common these days.

Twitter's always running in the background but I don't pay that much attention to it. It's a snapshot thing for me, fleeting and immediate. I like it because I've been able to stay in touch with fandom/LJ people on Twitter I would've 'lost' otherwise but I never scroll back to see what 'happened' while I was away/offline. That makes it completely stress-free for me ( ... )

I should treat it more snapshotty. That would help a lot. Same with Tumblr. I'm more able to do it with Tumblr.

Oooh. I'm trying to resist Instagram. The only person I'm interested in who posts on Instagram is Niall Matter (god help me for admitting that, I'm blushing, even) and he doesn't post that much, so I'm good for now!

*clings to you* I love you and your dinosaur ways. I am going to try to focus more on LJ/DW this year. I feel so much better already, just being able to express myself in long sentences and not having to chop everything down. *clings to sanity too* <3

You could always be like me and be incredibly BORING so nobody really wants to interact with me LOL, ,
(actually i prefer to call it flying under the radar)

Don't feel bad - I've seen people on Tumblr complain that they make one innocent remark and lose a dozen followers - I think thats pretty ruthless

I can relate to how you feel, but its not pmsing, but a very hot night (31 degrees C all night) and a bunch of 13 year olds for a sleepover

LOL. I am actually surprised that people interact with me as much as they do! I don't think of myself as terribly interesting, especially these days.

Meh. Tumblr is populated by babies.

Oh ew. That sounds rough! It's -1C here today, light flurries. No extra kids, thank god!

I use filters in LJ...or used to. (they call them groups in LJ) Nowadays my friends list is has about 6 active users. And I'm not helping either...and I often forget to re-open my LJ tab when I reboot so I'm pretty much non-existent here.

Twitter is way too active for me so I don't read over there almost at all.

Facebook I use filters in too. There are tons of people who I don't mind if they read my stuff, but post too much or, as you said, their interests don't overlap. I have dropped people entirely. I think most of the time it happens when they post something that crosses my personal line on being offensive.

Course, I don't actually read FB very much anymore either. So I guess my example probably doesn't help.

Oh, groups! I forgot all about groups!

You are doing life right, that's all I have to say. Alas, for me, I'm stuck in the asylum at home and my only contact with the outside world is the internet. I just have to figure out how to maximize my online experience.

I use a custom group thing on LJ and it has made my life a lot better. It's quiet and drama-free and I generally have the feed open in a tab at work. I'm happy to help you set one up if you'd like.

You people are clever, with your groups! I should do that. My flist is fairly drama-free. Honestly, I don't have anything against any of the people I'm contemplating dropping. It's more a question of them just not interesecting with any of my interests at this point in time.
