The females in Merlin and a note about OUaT
ETA: I just wanted to say that I'm feeling increasingly dissatisfied with Once Upon a Time. I feel like Rumplestiltskin isn't as grey as he used to be and where they are going with the women (they are all turning into warriors now?) is a bit disheartening. I'd like to see some women be strong in a quiet elegant way (the only woman who comes to mind in the show who acts this way is Cora and that's horrifying, frankly.)
Ok, onto not very well thought out list about Merlin females:
The women in Merlin in which I rant about how they treated the female characters
Ok, I just have to get this off my chest. I think 1, count it, 1 woman got decent treatment from TPTB in Merlin. That woman is Annis.
All the other women/girls/dragons were basically destroyed. My list and short descriptions are behind the cut. There were only something like 35 female characters (at least according to merlin.wikia.com).
1. Gwen (too painful to talk about, really)
2. Morgana: oh, look at how crazy she is
3. Mithian: went from being a total badass huntress to a sniveling waif. WTF (I think she might have been the hardest for me to stomach because I had spent so much time writing about her and had this whole headcanon about her character that was completely torn to shreds in S5.
4. Aithusa: started life male (really and truly) and apparently got turned female and also completely decimated, like anorexic.
5. Hunith: ?? I guess she was ok, but she really disappeared there, eh?
6. Freya: oh looked, possessed so she kills and then she dies
7. Nimueh: badass, until she dies (btw, Nimueh is Kara in 1.04. any relation to 5.12 Kara?)
8. Ygraine: dead to start with
9. Kara: crazy and then she dies
10. Morgause: badass, until she turned batshit crazy and died
11. Lamia: who wasn’t even a real female and then she dies (well, she had to die)
12. Eira: traitor, working for Morgana
13. Dochraid: omg, that thing -- did any men ever look that bad?
14. Helen! The woman who did nothing and had to die and the sorceress who killed her, then goes on to die too.
15. Grunhilda, GRUNHILDA
16. Mab (oooh, so cute, but such a tiny bit part)
17. Finna: awesome, but dead
18. The Cailleachs: crazy, right? Was she reasonable?
19. Audrey (cook)
20. Mary (barmaid) Actually, I love Mary.
21. Bronwen (poor girl who does nothing and gets killed in 1.01)
22. Forridel (she actually fared ok, didn’t she?)
23: all those girls from The Witchfinder
24: Rose (from Goblin’s Gold) -- hee hee. Actually, she was ok, if tortured by the goblin
25. Drea: poor girl, only survivor
26. The Disir: um, they didn’t have a happy life now, did they, even if they were kind of awesome
27: Sofia: batshit crazy
28. Elena: she actually came out pretty well by the end, right?
29. Catrina/troll: SHE WAS A FUCKING TROLL (I liked those eps, but not for that)
30. Vivian: snootier than hell before enchantment; batshit crazy after
31. Sefa: oh, look, she has to obey daddy and therefore commit treason (too bad there was no followup to her story; she might have been redeemable)
32. Isolde: AWESOME, except she died
33. Alice: possessed and then exiled
Anyone else I’m forgetting?
