Okay, here is one way you could interpret northern lights...

Dark starry background. Tall black trees surrounding the middle as if you are looking straight up at the sky in the middle of a clearing. Waves of undulating muli-colored organza so you can see the colors but still see the night sky behind or through it.You could weave it in behind the black trees also.

Oooh, what a way to be useless! I have spent most of my computer time podficcing today.

That picture gives me a different idea for how to execute it. It is a really lovely image. I will nestle it in my brain and see if it can come up with some way to make it happen:D
