but the best part is finding individuals we can connect with on a personal and intellectual level.

This. Yes. And I didn't even write about how I have become very close with people I normally wouldn't associate with because of religious or political beliefs.

I have a tendency to form deep relationships with people in person (and I'm not at all shy, you are shocked, I know:)), but what I get from my friendships here is something completely different.

Also, I had no idea you were shy. None.

You constantly interact with people who are different from you? Where do you find these people? At school? I'm very isolated, being a stay at home mom.

:( I think I've learned not to get too attached to people that I connect with quickly. I'm sorry to hear that you've been burned for doing that. I wasn't burned, but we moved a lot when I was young and I meet people now that I might see only once. I try to enjoy people while I can and when they move on, or I do, I know I've enjoyed them.

With LJ/DW, if people move or can't talk right away, that barrier is removed. I love that conversations can last a day or longer.

I also love seeing other people meet and connect and have interesting conversations in my LJ from time to time:)

As someone who isn't a Fan(tm) of anything, I must tell you that it's been really interesting (in a good way) to watch your fan interest grow. I think it's because I see both your fan stuff and you are so great about writing about the evolution of your own involvement.

Ok, I'm blushing here. I wasn't a fan of anything until last year, so it could still happen to you too!

What has been interesting for you? Can you point to something particular? I know other fans have said they love how excited I am about Merlin and Colin Morgan. I'm just happy to have a place I can chat freely about stuff that interests me, as most of the people I know in real life aren't interested in fan stuff at all.

Okay, so my own bias here...I think that you have helped shift my thinking about fans from "crazy fanatics" to "passionate contributors." I remember when it first started I said to J, "what is up with your sister and Merlin?" but then watching you grown your own creativity has opened my eyes about the art of fandom whole new way.

I still have negative time and my hands are crap (tendonitis and carpal tunnel) so I'm not on LJ that much anymore, but I still try and follow along...somewhat.

Ah, yes. I put myself in the crazy fanatics group too:) I think it's fair to say that I'm in both categories.

Fandom is an amazing place to cultivate creativity. And expression. I'm having a great time.

Boo to negative time and crappy hands!

Oh, we'll be in Seattle this summer. More on that when I know our firm dates!

I love the connections I've made with people here. Definitely. I treasure them. They inspire me. Excite me. Support me. Make me feel much less weird:)

I think you've hit on one of the biggest reasons that fandom even exists though ( ... )

Rambly is fine.

I've met some truly amazing people. I've found confidantes and friends that I can be silly with in a way that I can't always be in rl. I've found people who make me a better writer and a more critical reader.

Definitely!

I am glad you enjoyed my thinky thoughts and that they resonated with you. Fandom is awesome and people are awesome:)

Ditto. That's what I love about fandom as well.

I can’t separate fannish me from quilty me from mommy me. They are all up there together in my brain.

Funny enough are your reasons for not locking your entries exactly the ones WHY I lock my journal. I'm too paranoid that potential future employers will find stuff I only want to share anonymously. And that's first of all my fanfiction = slash. Except for that I don't have a problem with what I write about my personal live but I don't wanna share it with the world. That's only my buisness.

Oh, I get exactly why people lock entries. I hope that I am lucky enough to be in a position where it doesn't matter what I post. I do sometimes worry about that since I've started posting explicit fics, but the veneer of anonymity helps me, I think.

Also, I feel like my life is so boring, it's most likely not interesting to people who don't know/interact with me already.
