Magic reveal

Anyone want to talk about how the magic reveal should go down?  skuares was saying that she thought it would be interesting if Merlin did magic and Arthur saw it, but Merlin didn't know.

Part of me thinks it should be some simple thing that gets Merlin caught and part of me thinks that it should be a life or death thing where Merlin reveals his magic.

I've written a number of reveal fics. My favorites are when Merlin has to do magic to save someone (usually Arthur) but that Arthur reacts badly to the magic and the fact that Merlin has been lying to him for years. So that Merlin either dies or is exiled or runs away. Very few happy endings in my mind.

I honestly don't know how they would handle it on the show. Up to this year, I thought they would do it very well (esp. Julian Jones who writes well and seems to get Merlin and Arthur's banter just right) but after Lancelot du Lac episode and the episode where Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone, I'm not so sure.

Ack! You don't think they would never do the magic reveal, do you? I need the reveal and I need a happy ending. This show is all about the happy endings for me, except for what they did to Lancelot and Gwen.

Are you talking about 4.12 and 4.13 together? I can't remember which one was the one where he actually pulls the sword out. I did not like the ending of 4.13.

I guess it's time for me to start writing my own happy ending reveal fics.

I'm not sure they will ever do the magic reveal. If they were going to do it, they would have done it in series 4 since they were leading up to it very clearly for the first 1/2 of the series.

I think it was 4.13 (which Julian Jones wrote and I was quite unhappy about it since I expected more from him). The whole thing felt off-balance - with the sword-pulling and Merlin using mind-control on Arthur and the quick wedding. Not a fan of that episode.

You should write your own happy ending reveal fics if that's what you want to happen. I love angst so I'd want lots of it before things got better.

Clearly there needs to be lots of angst before the reconciliation, but I do love a happy ending, even if it's not always realistic:D

I think if they do have a magical reveal, it will be happy - eventually. They are going towards canon, or so they've said.

I also thought they would do the reveal during season 4 but then I read an interview in which they stated clearly that they had a 5 season story arc planned out for the whole series and really hoped that they would make it to a series 5. So I really hope for that now.
Although season 4 was IMHO one of the best after season 1 it still had some stories I wholeheartedly hated like e.g. the sword in the stone episode. I get why they needed it but it didn't fit the slow build up at all. It was suddenly there and that was it. The same with the end. He sees Gwen and in an instand they're back together and married. It felt as if they remembered that they had to fit in some canon stories before the season ended and so they rushed things. I hated it.

I thought the first half of series 4 was amazing and then it went downhill from there. I really disliked Lancelot du Lac episode and the last one was really rushed. I hope they go back and deal more with Gwen's betrayal even though they are now married. We'll see how they deal with Merlin and Arthur's relationship now that Gwen is between them.

The only thing I liked with the Lancelot episode was the end when Merlin said goodbye. The whole betrayal thing was as rushed as the sword in the stone thing. It felt like they had to throw it in but didn't know how to do it or when. The betrayal lost much of the drama because it was caused by magic. The bracelet idea was totally stupid. Arthur and Merlin didn't know it so for them it was real but for the viewer it lost so much.

Besides that Gwen was always between them. I don't think they will change much in the next season.
Just in my own little head canon she was in the way because Merlin and Arthur were a happy couple;)

I didn't like the end of the Lancelot episode because if Lance hadn't said goodbye at the end of that episode, then it could be argued that it wasn't Lance at all but a fake one made to look like him. Then he could have come back for real and been confused by everything. This way, he's really dead for good. A horrible ending to a noble knight.

I thought the spell Merlin said lifted Morgana's spell. That's why only in the end scene Lancelot was really himself. Before that for the whole episode it was his body but his mind, his self, was trapped in it so he couldn't do anything against the things Morgana let him do. So in a sense it wasn't him at all.

That's not a reason for me he can't come back from the dead. Especially with the whole Percival story not yet told there are so many roads to take to bring Lancelot back. I don't believe they will but there would be possibilities.
