pics.livejournal.com/jelazakazone/pic/0000103w/g3 is a picture of the wallhanging I am currently working on.
The very first question that was asked of me in college class was "what is art" and I have been entertaining this question for years.
lewisian_gneiss asked me in a recent post "Is your quilting / beading not art?" to which I replied: As for quilting/beading being art, that is a good question. I have had this conversation before. Somehow, quilting is considered a craft and I'm happy for it to have that label. Maybe I should have a whole separate post about that. I will do that. Too much to cover here. So, I'm starting that conversation here.
First of all, I think it is much easier to say "what is science; or maybe better, what is scientific".
I am not sure why I shy away from labeling what I do art. Maybe
princealia can weigh in a bit here. If it has to be labeled "art", I think it would get the "folk art" label because I'm untrained. I often struggle with composition. The last wallhanging I did, I had to go look on google to find out how composition even worked! I think I have a knack for doing interesting things, but that doesn't make what I do art.
I dunno. Talk to me about art. Go look at what I've done and see if you would call it art. It's ok if you don't. I don't. I make quilts because it makes me happy (most of the time) and I love being able to give them away. It's like cooking someone a good dinner. Do you consider cooking to be art? (Maybe if you don't, you should come eat at my house;)). I don't consider cooking to be art either, although I could be persuaded.
Oh, and I just noticed that I asked if cooking was an art, vs art. I think it is an art, but I don't consider food/dinner to be art. Interesting....
Ok, go chat. I've got to do something that isn't in front of the computer. Here's hoping the advil has kicked in.
