I took my car in this morning to have a tech diagnose the sound it's been making.  I got the diagnosis and said I would be back on Monday.  Then it occurred to me that I could take it to my local mechanic and it would be a heck of a lot more convenient.  The diagnosis was either a bad tire or a wheel bearing.  The one advantage of taking it to the ( Read more... )

If it was making the noise before you bought the tires, seems unlikely that it's a tire that's causing the problem.

So taking it to the local mechanic seems like it should be fine.

What kind of noise?

I'm suspicious of the "bad tire" diagnosis for weird noises. Tires are often responsible for various steering- and ride-related ills, particularly on front-wheel-drive vehicles, but not necessarily noises, other than louder-than-usual road hum.

If a tire was badly defective enough to make noises, assuming it's relatively new, replacement should be covered under the tire warranty, though.

Well, I describe it as a sort of purring. The tech thought it sounded like a roaring. It is quite noticeable when the car is going about 35-40 mph, especially when decelerating.

What's your diagnosis, doc?:) And would you recommend I take it to the dealer (who I bought the tires from, but not the car)?
