Jesus Christ of Nazareth

Jesus identifies Himself in this way to Paul: "I am Jesus of Nazareth"

On the cross, the sign that hung above Jesus read: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"

Men and angels also refer to Jesus as "Jesus of Nazareth" (Luke 18:37, Luke 24:19, John 18:5, John 19:19, Mark 16:6, Mark 1:24)

Peter preaches and heals in Jesus' name - "Jesus Christ of Nazareth" (Acts 3:6, 4:10)

It seems interesting to me that Jesus is referred to in this way. I thought that people usually were referred to as being "the son of...". There are two times when Jesus is referred to as the son of Joseph (John 1:45, John 6:42), though of course we know that he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary (Luke 3:23). Jesus often refers to Himself as the "Son of Man", reflected in the genealogy recorded by Luke in chapter 3. And we know that Jesus is the Son of God - this is how Mark and John's gospels begin. Sometimes, Jesus is also called the "Son of David", and Matthew shows us at the beginning of his gospel how Jesus is the promised Messiah, offspring of David's line.

When Jesus identifies Himself to Paul, He refers to Himself as "Jesus of Nazareth." This made me wonder... Jesus was born in Bethlehem, was hidden in Egpyt for safety as a baby, and then lived and grew up in Nazareth. It was in Nazareth where he learned to work, worship, and serve the Lord. And even after He was raised from the dead, he identified Himself by this town where He grew up.
