Lead On, Lord

No matter how much I beg others to figure it out for me, this path is mine alone to walk. No one can map it for me. No one else can walk it for me. The Lord calls me to take up my cross and follow Him. Even if I don't know where I am going!

I find myself asking over and over again, of so many people - show me the way!

I don't feel comfortable in my job - show me the way to one where I will feel fit!
I don't feel comfortable in my research interests - show me the one that is perfectly fit for me!
I don't feel comfortable - what is wrong with me? What is my heart trying to tell me? Show me the way...
I want to serve the Lord, but I don't know how He wants me to serve Him... Please, Lord, show me the way.

If only someone would just "know" who and what I am and where I should go. Then, how eagerly I would pick up and follow.

But who knows the life journey of a man? "A man's steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?" Proverbs 20:24

What did He tell Abraham? ...to a land that I will show you. God called him, but to where, Abram didn't know yet. What a painful place - that place of being called and yet feeling so blind as to the way.

But the Lord doesn't leave us as orphans. He comes to us. (John 14:18) He is the One leading us. And so our hearts incline toward Him, following His voice, even if we can't see the path. While we may feel lost in the sorrow and confusion, God is drawing us along a path. He is calling us to share in His sorrow and love, to grow closer to Him and His likeness. "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love" (Colossians 1:13). We can't see the ways that He is purifying our hearts, aligning them with His own. We can't see how He is shedding away our pride and fear, driving us on to grow in strength and hope. We may feel blind to it, and totally lost, but He is still leading us.

I praise You, Father, for this cross, sorrowful though it is. Because through it You are crucifying the world to me and me to the world (Galatians 6:14). Bring me through these waters into life. Show me the path. And help me to become a guide for others someday.

Lead Thou me on.

Help me, Lord, to trust You. Because it is You who leads me. Restore my heart within me and draw it to Yours. Give me a voice with which to pour out my tears and adoration. Strengthen my heart to endure at this place along the path, though I can't see it, and cause me to rejoice in Your Presence before me.

Lead Thou me on.
