This is kind of "Six Degrees of LJ" story. In true storytelling fashion, I'll start at the end and then flashback to the beginning.
I'm tickled to report I won the "Best Overall Design" in the UNC Linberger Comprehensive Cancer Center's
Hearfelt Hats 2008 contest. They've just posted photos of the winning hats from the awards ceremony, and a closeup of the lovely custom pendant I won as a prize.
How did I come to enter? I read about the contest in LaBricoleuse's LJ, when she was writing about hats.
My sister-in-law Susan died of Lymphoma three years ago; ansd I remember talking to her during her chemo about hats and wigs and things to do when your hair falls out. Miss Susan was a dancer who ran a dance studio in Syracuse for a dozen years: she was a fighter and an optimist and an inspiration to a generation of dance students. She liked colorful, bold, cheerful hats, so I made four in her honor with a mix of quilting and decorator cottons: angel cats, bold florals, an africanish gold-accented leopard print. The crowns are lined with flannel on a drawstring, so they are soft on the skin, and adjustable.
I'm glad they were chosen, and I'm glad they are going to other people chalenged by cancer. I hope they win, too!
