The Pit

I used to love BBSs. My first modem, put inside my Tandy TL/2 computer, was what started it all. Before that I was just trading files with my other friend who had a computer. Now all my friends have a computer but then none of them did. I have fond memories of the friend. I used to give him a hard time because my computer had a hard drive and he always had to put a disk with command.com in the A: to continue. He had one up on me though, he had a modem. I only had to see him dial into a BBS once and I knew it was for me. Shortly after I went out to buy my first modem.

Just a few short hours upon getting home with my modem, anyone calling into my house was getting nothing but a busy signal. The first BBS I dialed was the Forgotten Realms BBS. The first thing I downloaded was a node-list so I could find all the BBSs in my area. Then I was off to the races. I quickly compiled a list of 5 or 6 BBSs that were my home. Each had something unique that made me love it. Exchanging messages with people about role-playing games, school work, trading pictures, and the door games. Oh the door games.

Door games were early multi-player games. Some of the more popular ones include: Trade Wars, and Legend of the Red Dragon. Of all the games, and there were a bunch, my absolute favorite was a game called The Pit. The Pit was a gladiator style game where you would fight in a gladiator areana. You could fight various computer opponents of various degrees of difficulty and obtain improved weapons and armor. However, you could also fight other players of the game and take their stuff. I was so hooked on this game it wasn't even funny. I think about it on occasion and today I found a place I can play it online. I think.

Anyway I have been looking for a project to learn about game programming. Learning game programming has always been a little overwhelming for me because I didn't know of a project that would keep me interested. Today I have that project. Over the next couple of months I am going to work on creating a new version of The Pit. I will use this journal record my progress. Anyone else want to do some game programming?
