Young performer delivers the oldies at Doolin’s

By: Mike Beggs

He’s only 27 (I'm actually 30), but singer/guitarist Jeff Kahl will be delving into some great singer/songwriter stuff dating right back to the 60s this Friday at Doolin’s.
That includes your Gordon Lightfoot, CCR, Jim Croce, Burton Cummings, Blue Rodeo and the Beatles.
“Some people have joked with me. They like to say I was born in the wrong decade,” he says. “I guess I’ve always valued good songwriting.”
“I grew up in the Grunge era, but secretly I went home and put on the Beatles.”
You will also hear some songs off his upcoming debut CD Catching Echoes Off The Walls. It balances his delightfully ragged originals with covers of Bruce Cockburn, Robert Johnson, and (1970’s Quebecois band) Harmonium.
The Lorne Park Secondary grad grew up in a musical family, and plays four instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano). In fact, he played the circuit with his father Wally (it's Ole) for several years. He has worked extensively with the Neil Young cover band Harvest, and in his own Neil-influenced act Spookyhorse.
Kahl’s song If I Could Be The One gets requested at jams around Port Credit. But he’s hoping for more with the new release (produced by Spookyhorse sidekick Myke Mazzei).
“I wouldn’t mind getting some airplay,” he says. “That would be nice.”
It's a 9 p.m. start at Doolin’s Pub, 1575 Clarkson Rd., at South Service Rd.
