Finally got the time to post this, tagged by
velvedere ! :) You'd think vacations would, uh, leave you with *more* free time, but ... anyway.
Comment to this entry and I'll pick three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
This time around, I got: Family Guy, Hitchhiker's Guide, and Over The Hedge.
[Family Guy]
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
Well, I saw the comeback episode ("North by North Quahog") in my freshman year of high school, but it utterly horrified me at the time. I hadn't even seen a PG-13 movie by then, so to me it was, like, completely scandalous humor. Luckily, a few years (and many PG-13 movies) later, I was browsing around YouTube for the music video to a-ha's "Take On Me", and I noticed the Family Guy version, where Chris is pulled inside of it. That in turn directed me to a bunch of other "Family Guy" clips, and the more I watched it ... the more I liked it. So I started watching full episodes and, well, the rest is history, I guess.
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I'll probably stay in it until the show stops airing, at the very least. These last couple seasons have been kind of on-again, off-again, IMO, but I still really, really like it and will probably continue to watch until the final episode. I see my obsessions through to the end, I do.
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
By far my favorite episode is "You May Now Kiss the ... Uh ... Guy Who Receives", because I love the character of Jasper and I really liked the way they dealt with the whole gay marriage issue. The writers were smart enough to recognize that, even though they were standing on a soapbox for equal rights, gay jokes are still extremely funny. And they did it in a way that wasn't preachy and stayed true to the characters. Unlike this season's episode, "Family Gay", but that's another rant.
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I've posted on a couple message boards about it, and I've written fanfiction for it. There's a story I
posted about here, "It Has to Be Said", which dealt with the UST between Brian and Lois. I also wrote a couple others about Stewie and Brian, although they were under a different account because I, uh, didn't think that most of the people who watch the Jeffaplus account would be too thrilled with them. Basically, I was sick of the writers just *hinting* that Stewie has a crush on Brian and decided to resolve it myself, with Stewie developing a chemical that turns a very horrified Brian onto him and trying to pursue a relationship that way. (Curiously enough, this was before the "Family Gay" episode where something very similar happens to Peter, and a couple people accused me of being a writer on the show ... I wish.) The fic is called
"Coming Out", and I promise it's only a little bit creepy. If you do read it, I'd love a review. :) [/shameless advertising]
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Although it does seem kind of unlikely since viewership is starting to go down, by all means more people should come into the fandom if they want. I really enjoy hearing what people think about the episodes and I've gotten into a couple interesting character discussions with people. (The unfortunate conclusion is that Stewie and Brian are the only extremely well-developed characters, due to the dynamic between the two of them.) But yeah, it's definitely a fun thing to talk about and I've met a couple nice people through it.
[Hitchhiker's Guide]
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
Having never heard of it before, when the movie came out on DVD, I rented it because it had a few actors I liked (Zooey Deschanel, Alan Rickman). I ended up loving the movie, so I decided to pick up the book. (You know, the "Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide" that's like a thousand pages and has all five in the series.) I am eternally grateful that I discovered the series this way, because had I read the books first, I probably would have hated the movie. I wasn't that big a fan of the TV show - probably because it was the eighties and it seemed unbearably cheesy - but the books and movie are, in a word, awesome.
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've pretty much moved on; I mean, I still reread the books from time to time, and I have the movie on my computer so I watch it a lot. But the fact that the book series had already firmly wrapped itself up several years ago (if you've read all five, you'll know why I hated the end of the last one) kind of kept me from wanting to actively participate in the fandom.
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Well, my favorite book in the series is probably the first, just 'cause ... I dunno. It had a very witty and snarky writing style and I loved the idea behind the story - basically an enormous parody of all popular sci-fi. I also like the third, because Flying Arthur is awesome. Toward the end of the series it started to delve into stuff like parallel universes and different thought processes and got a bit confusing, but I still loved it. Although, like I said, the ending was ... not pleasant.
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not really. I mean, like I said, I've never really felt the need to. I visited h2g2 a couple of times, and I looked up fanfiction more than once (most of it was Arthur/Ford slash ... and though I love slash, I find that OOC, myself), but that's about it. There's very few people who can really capture Douglas Adams' true writing "voice" (utterly random yet completely interconnected), so I've been content to stick to the canon.
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
By all means. It's a huge fandom in itself (it's been going since, what, the late seventies?), but if I were to make a list of "Books to Read Before You Die", Hitchhiker's Guide would definitely be on that list. It just says so much about humanity, and it's all wrapped up in a humorous, snarky, random narrative that almost anyone can enjoy. And the Answer to Life, The Universe and Everything is revealed to be 42. Come on, you don't get any better than that.
[Over the Hedge]
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I called my friend Katrina one day and asked her if she wanted to hang out; she mentioned she was going to see this new movie and invited me along. At the time I'd seen the trailers and wasn't too impressed, but then - surprise - I loved the movie. I really don't know why it appeals to me so much. Maybe it's the characters, each with their own personality quirks but still very well-developed (and acted), or maybe it's just how it endlessly mocks suburbia, society in general and the types of neighborhoods I live in. That, and it's hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. I still laugh hysterically at "But I like the cookie!"
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I've mostly moved on. I was very involved in it at one time and I'll always love the movie, but after the hype kinda died down I got interested in different things. I haven't *completely* moved on, though, just because the fanfic I've written about it still isn't finished. It's been three years...
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Well, my favorite part of the movie is by far when [SPOILER] Hammy drinks caffeine and freezes time. I'd love to be able to do that. It was just so unexpected and well-executed, and it made Hammy my favorite character (that, plus because friends tell me he reminds them of me).
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Oh heck yes. During the summer after the movie came out I posted on boards, made friends (Hi, Rallers!) and created graphics. I wrote a
fanfic about the characters getting sent to an animal testing lab. I wrote a
sequel to it (that's the one that still isn't done). Over the Hedge is probably the fandom that I've participated the most in. Ironic, then, that it's such a small one...
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Yes, definitely. It really is a fun fandom, but I got kind of frustrated with it because there's so few good writers/participants, and several bad ones. But if more people came into it then the amount of writers - good writers - would undoubtedly go up. Over the Hedge has inspired a very loyal fanbase, and it's one that's definitely worth a look into.
Well that was fun. =]
In other news, I'm headed back down to campus on Monday to work the summer Shakespeare festival. This should be interesting. Certainly not boring, which is more than I can say for other summers. Although I hope I still have time to be addicted to the internet work on other projects as well. We'll see!
