There's no great need to upgrade the hard drive, as long as you've got enough storage elsewhere on your network. Gigabytes are a lot cheaper in the 3.5 inch SATA form factor and 100BaseT is plenty quick, even for HDTV content. "The network IS the computer".
I'm wondering whether the CD-RW module you show isn't just the same as any slim CD or DVD drive? They have an unusual connector on the back, and for a standard PC they require the addition of a little converter module to allow them to connect to a PATA connector. But if it is the same, then you needn't settle for only what you can find in used Dell components on ebay. That would mean that a more current DVD-RW drive could be added.

In a word, yes. I sometimes watch TV for information (think Weather Channel) but much more rarely to be entertained. The last TV show I watched regularly and looked forward to was "Firefly". I will watch whatever's on when I'm sick and drugged up and on the couch with nothing else to do, and I will also watch America's Funniest Home Videos when I have nothing else pressing to do, but it's the same now as it was then: TV is not a priority for me.
