On this day - October 10, 1973

On this day in 1973, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew pleaded no contest to one count of federal income tax evasion and resigned his office.

At the time, Agnew was facing charges including bribery, extortion, tax fraud, and conspiracy.  The feds dropped everything to one count of tax evasion in return for Agnew agreeing to resign the Vice Presidency.

Why do I find this notable?  Mainly because if you rearrange the letters in Spiro Agnew's name, you get "grow a penis."  It's my favorite political anagram.  I wish I could take credit for it, but I got it from the stupendously great writer Dave Barry.
