I don't know who made this poll or why, but I filled it out and then looked through the results, and the question "Why do you follow the team(s) you follow?" has some great answers. Here are some of my favorites (some full, some just excerpts):

I have no explanation for the Oilers. The heart wants what it wants.

After Bobrovsky's supernatural season last year, I want Columbus to be successful. Before that I followed them because of the twitter bromance with LA not even going to lie.

They're pesky.

I got stupid Crosby feels because of fic

I live in Toronto, the Leafs are obligatory. Back up teams are necessary for sanity.

I cheer for the US when I feel patriotic, and I cheer for Canada when I feel like emigrating.

I started following the Habs for two reasons--because I was taking French at the time and it seemed like easy practice, and because I decided that if I was going to be in hockey fandom, I wanted to follow a team with players of color.

I am incapable of being rational in the face of Patrick Kane.

my local rugby team is called the Hurricanes so I kind of bonded with them

Blue Jackets b/c Bobrovsky <3 and being The Little Team That Almost Could.

because DANNY BRIÈRE now has the accent grave on his jersey

I became a Hawks fan because you assholes on Tumblr and Ao3 made me like them so much.

One of my friends who is a big hockey fan sent me a news article about the Blackhawks taking the Cup to Pride in Chicago, which was incredibly important to me as a member of the LGBTQIA community.

At first so I could visualize Kane and Toews boning, but then I bought gamecenter and started watching games at the gym and then I became a full-fledged fan.

San Jose: original home team. Chicago: new home team. Buffalo: vacation home team. Columbus: pity. Team Finland: original original home team. Team Norway: pity.

was watching a bunch of games from Skinner's rookie season for fic research, got sucked into caring about the team as a whole

I followed Kane/Toews down the rabbit hole.

I was surrounded by Red Wings fans and wanted to be contrary.

basically I follow them because they gave me a reason to shout at them and be pessimistic about their chances, in the hope that I would be wrong?

sometimes they do fascinating and beautiful things with hockey that are impressive because of improbable physics!!!

CBJ I got into via their Twitter.

I realized that the Blackhawks were my team when I could recognize even the guys who didn't have fic written about them.

I follow the Oilers because I like pain?

Regional loyalties, Stockholm Syndrome

I picked up hockey in general because I was unemployed, and the games gave me something to look forward too, as well as something to talk to my family about (other than the six thousand applications I had sent out each day.) It seems silly in retrospect, but discovering hockey really helped me through a fairly crummy time.

Romans! On! Ice!

They seem to be a great bunch of guys and a really great fanbase, they've been doing Pride Night since before YCP was a thing

Honestly, I picked it when I was 13 out of spite for my flyers fan brother.

I root for the Hawks because I'd rather root for a winner than the next closest team (which would be the EFFING WILD).

Nail is love!

When I started watching the Blackhawks, most of my favourite players were rookies, and consequently I fell HARD for the Rockford Ice Hogs when the lockout happened. I was just so into that group of kids and their playing together that secretly I didn't want the lockout to end because I knew it was going to break up the Hog band.

Because Jagr.

That last one cracks me up because what does that person do, just switch teams every few months? XD
