'All pornography is homosexual pornography, because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards.' And if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he's going to want to get a copy of Playboy? I'm pretty sure he'll lose interest... It's a good thing to teach young people."
-- Michael Schwartz, chief of staff for Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, speaking at Values Voters Summit
Pretty sure he'll lose interest? Really? Here's what I know: 11-year-olds will look at that Playboy, get turned on, just like adults, and then you tell him (or worse, tell him beforehand) that that makes him a homosexual. And suddenly, the LGBT community sees a huge influx of heterosexual boys with serious questions about their sexuality.
"No son, lookin' at Playboy doesn't make you homosexual. If you're aroused' at Playgirl, on the other hand...."
I know he means well, and technically, in the autoerotic sense, he's correct, but I really don't think we need to muddy the already chaotic lives of our adolescents by confusing their sexual identity any more than our media does currently.
Here's a better way: "Kid, porn messes up your mind, makes you think that the world is different than it is, and that's dangerous, because you might end up like (fill in your most hated media personality)."
