For my Japanese Culture class, I'm writing a research paper on female-role actors and prostitution in Kabuki theater in Tokugawa Japan (I kid you not). An interesting topic, though there's not much on it. All the older stuff either ignores the subject entirely or makes vague references to samurai becoming enamored with young actors. Guess it kinda makes sense. Gay cross-dressing actors and the samurai who loved them. Probably not something that's going to get you a lot of academic recognition for. So I've been skimming through a lot of random things to get information. As a result, I am finding out WAY more about homosexuality in Japan (hell, in general) then I ever wanted to know. Keep in mind I have gay friends with no concept of too-much-information and I hang around many yaoi fandoms.
I'm trying to decided how much of this scaring I should transfer to my paper. Probably not much. I need a good grade.
ANYWAYS, the whole reason I started this entry. The one book I'm using has a section on boy-love in women's comics. The chapter itself is pretty dry (I will never figure out how a book entirely about gay sex can be so boring) but it had the best line ever when describing the rise in popularity of shounen-ai in the 70's.
"A pretty girl waiting for a handsome prince is boring, a pretty boy meeting another pretty boy is interesting."
I think that one line sums up every yaoi fandom I have ever seen. Perfectly.
