Susan Boyle gave me and the rest of the world an extraordinary shock on Britain's Got Talent. And what's sad is most of the audience (at the theatre and watching at home) and the judges had written her off before she had even begun. Are we so prejudice against people's looks that we can't imagine someone who doesn't look like a celebrity having any talent whatsoever?
But I loved her attitude when she walked out on that stage. Even after a life that's been less than extraordinary to her (the poor woman's never been kissed!), after giving herself to helping those less fortunate than her, she still walked out on that stage, head held high even though they were laughing at her, and spit out a few cheeky jokes before stunning the audience into a standing ovation.
That's real courage.
