Dear Students:

As I am sure you know, The University of Alabama must overcome a $23 million reduction in state appropriations for the upcoming academic year. With additional obligations that include mandated, but unfunded, increases in retirement and insurance, increases in utility costs and debt service for the new Science and Engineering building, the total impact to the FY 2008-2009 budget will be a shortfall of nearly $36 million.

Through the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff, UA is able to be a responsible and conservative steward of our resources. For the past 2 ½ years, we have been engaged in a concerted effort to enhance effectiveness and efficiency, through program eliminations and staff reductions that have already produced cost savings of more than $7 million. As a result, we will be able to absorb half of the shortfall internally.

And, although we have done everything possible to keep the increase as low as possible, we must rely on an increase in tuition to make up the difference. This increase is based on the resources the University needs to be able to continue to provide the high-quality educational experience you came to UA to receive.

Because we understand the potential impact this increase can have on you and your family, we are working diligently to make sure you will have information about and access to a variety of resources, including payment plans and scholarship opportunities.

I commit to you that we will continue to do our part as an institution to use our resources effectively and efficiently, and that we will stay focused on providing you with the best educational experience possible. I have full confidence that, working together, we will meet this challenge and maintain our momentum as we move forward.

Dr. Robert E. Witt
President
