Being a Big Brother
„Are you serious?“ Sam looked so unhappy right now, that Dean wished he could just hug is brother and everything would be alright again, just like when they were kids. But these times were over and Dean sighed heavily.
„Come on, little bro, it's just a simple hunt, I can do this on my own, done it a lot while you were gone.“ Dean regretted his words as soon as he spoke them.
Sam flinched. Way to go Dean. He was so not good with this emoshit and lately Sam seemed so vulnerable and lost and Dean didn't know what to do. Even his jokes and pranks couldn't snap Sam out of his mood.
He clenched his fist. Damn it. „I can do this in my sleep......you can do this in your sleep.“ He tried again, but as expected Sam didn't budge and simply starred at Dean.
„No“, he said, „you are not going alone.“
Dean counted to 10 in his head. Why was his brother so stubborn all of sudden? Sure, he pulled shit like that all the time, but not Sam.
„You are in no condition to hunt now, Sam!“ On cue Sam coughed so heavily Dean could feel it in his chest, too.
He handed his brother a glass ofwater. „Here you go. Take it easy.“
He rubbed light circles on his brother's back . Sam took a sip and leaned into the touch of his big brother. Dean smiled. „Better?“Sam coughed once more and nodded.
So okay maybe he wasn't so bad at this emo shit at all.
„Promise me, you won't go !“ Sam looked so serious that Dean started to worry again.
Why was Sam acting so strange?
„Sam, this needs to be done tonight, you know that.“ „But.....I.....“ Sam started but turned his head away. He sniffled.
Dean tried to compose himself. He patted Sam's leg stood up and began to pack his weapon duffle.
All of sudden Sam sprinted off the bed.
„DEAN! PLEASE!“ He stumbled very akwardly and Dean found himself with an armful of his not so little brother.
What the hell? As he was sure that Sam wouldn't fall again he straightend them both up and looked his sibling in the eyes. He was shocked to see actual tears there. He acted on instinct, as he put his brother's head in both hands and wiped the tears away with his thumbs.
„Sammy?“ Dean started really to freak out here. This was so not Sam, yeah Sam was all about emo and chickflick suff, but crying? He'd done that a lot when he was younger, but now? Over a bad cough? And was he really worried about Dean going alone on that really really simple hunt that Sam had done alone already as a teenager?
Dean was interupted in thoughts as Sam began to sway. He carefully helped Sam to sit on the bed and sat beside him. Sam leaned on him again and Dean put an arm around him to steady him.
„You wanna tell me what's going on Sam? I think you have a fever.“ He added to his questions as he could feel the heat radiating from his brother.
Sam didn't answer just snuggled closer. „Dude, did you just wipe your nose on my sleeve? That's gross. I don't want your snot all over my shirt.“
That made Sam giggle and Dean was a little bit relieved. He tried to coax Sam back to lie down, but Sam just held on stubborn as ever.
„Sam!...Sammy?. Just lay down okay? You really worrying me here, okay?“
Sam nodded and began to lay down, but as Dean started to move away he grabbed his brother's arm.
„DEAN! Don't go!“ he started to panic.
„Hey, hey, hey! Calm down, I'm just going to the bathroom to get a wet towel. We need to get that fever down.“ He looked over to the open bathroom door and Sam followed his gaze. „See? Only over there.“
Sam nodded again and let go of his brother. Dean hurried to the bathroom and grabbed the next best towel and began to wet it in the sink. He could hear Sam coughing and wondered when this cough had become so bad. Sam seemed fine just this morning. „Dean?“ „Yeah, Sam, I'm still here.“
Sam was just trying to crawl out of bed as Dean came back into the room. „Dude, you are like a toddler. Stay in bed!“ He pushed Sam back . „Here, take these.“ He handed him some pills. Sam took them willingly his glassy eyes searching for Dean's.
„You are really burning up.“ Dean laid the towel over Sam's forehead. Sam sighed in relief.
Just as Dean wanted to ask if Sam wanted anything else, Sam began: „Please Dean, don't leave.“
„Sam...I...“ „Please, Dean don't leave me here alone.“
And there they were, the famous Sam Winchester puppy dog eyes.
Dean closed his eyes and sighed heavily. He could give Bobby a call. Surely he would know someone who could take care of this hunt. There was no way Sam would let him leave now.
But why was he so afraid? Afraid for his brother or afraid of being alone?
He tried to remember if Sam ever acted like this before when he got a fever. He could recall every childhood diseases Sam ever got, but Sam never.....wait there was this one time. Sam was 10 and got the flu. Dean wanted to stay with Sam in the motel room but Dad needed help with this ghosthunt, so they left Sam alone. Dad thought he would sleep all night, because of his fever and the medication and sure he had, but something went wrong with the hunt and both Dean and Dad ended up in the hospital. It was nothing bad, but Sam was alone when he woke up still confused and his fever sill running hig, he started to panic.
Dean remembered that morning, when they came back from the hospital. At first they couldn't find Sam. He was hiding in the bathtube crying.
After convincing his little brother, that they were really back and nobody was hurt he finally fell asleep, but not before Dean promised him to never leave him alone and always to come back.
Dean looked at his little brother now all grown up, still coughing and trying not to jotle the towel. He would definitive call Bobby.
„Hey Sammy, you know I'll never leave you, right? And that I'll always come back?“
Sam starred at him and nodded slowly. „So, then just go to sleep, will ya? I'm staying here and keep watch.“ Dean smiled as Sam's eyes slowly shut.
He settled on the other bed to keep his promise. Sometimes to be a big brother is more important than everything else.
