Knitting truly is spiffy, I think. For example, here are some pengies in sweatars:
These penguins are victims of an oil spill. Crude oil destroys the penguins' natural oils, so they are unable to protect themselves from the cold. Also, penguins are tempted to preen to clean themselves off after an oil spill, but if a penguin swallows crude oil it will become poisoned and die. A
penguin sweater movement was launched and now there is a stockpile of penguin sweaters in case there is another oil spill. Post-spill penguins are dressed in wool sweaters and rehabilitated. Eventually the salt water degrades the wool and they can go back into the wild. =)
So my next knitting project, I present to you...::drumroll::

Yupyup, it's
Jayne's Hat from episode 11 of Firefly. Fellow Browncoat
tvini runs a
website where she sells patterns, kits, and knitwear--including
a kit to make the Jayne hat. It came complete with an envelope
stamped with different ports of call like Capital City Osiris and Canton and that place with the geese juggling. Everything was neatly wound up in balls and such. It even came with stitch holders (nice touch.)
the hat on needles, my tote bag, the yarn in it's baggie, and a little bit of my needle roll sticking out
I'd never knit a hat before, but this project was a breeze. My kit arrived on Friday afternoon (I ordered it like, Monday night or something, so that was impressively fast) and I had everything done by Sunday afternoon. I think from now on I might start knitting hats...they are much easier to finish for someone of my attention span, if harder to make attractive and make use of in sunny SoCal. I think I measured my head wrong, though, because my gauge was correct but the hat was a little too loose for me. Fits great on Ken, though.
Ken does not like the hat because he does not like wooly (itchier) yarn. Also because he has not seen that episode of Firefly and therefore does not understand how damn cunning it is. Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything. Therefore, pouting.
I actually came out with some leftover yarn that I don't know what to do with. I don't think it's enough to knit a second hat but it's enough to make me want to try. 0_0
The Unicorn and his HeadCrab friend seem to like it well enough.
I think the best part of this project was that it was guilt free, since the
proceeds go to covering her daughter's therapy for her PDD-NOS (on the autism spectrum); there's a chance Asperger's Syndrome runs in my family so I guess it's sort of like paying it forward. Her story gave me a different perspective on parenting, so uh, yeah. =)
We watched
Independence Day on July 4th at Dave and Rhonda's and it was really jarring to see
Adam Baldwin (Jayne) play a tactical officer/Major in the Secret Service/Military. And
President Laura Roslin as the first lady married to
Lone Starr. Man, that movie is dated. We couldn't stop giggling. I totally ship Lone Starr/Roslin.
ALSO: The most
awesomest shirt about knitting, evar. They need to make this in girl sizes!
